Absolutely. You do not want to install XP on the same partition as the 98 install. Create a second partition and install it there.
Sorry.

Browse All TopicsIs it possible to install Windows XP as a new install (not an upgrade) on the same partition as W98? When I try, I get a warning that this is not advisable as it may impact the operation of the old OS (i.e. W98). I want to have the option of using either/or. I know you can do it if they are on different partitions.

It isn't advised, but you can do it. Just make sure you install xp in a folder different from your windows 98 installation (something like "C:\WinXP"). And you'll need to make sure you install your programs in folders other than "C:\Program Files" since your windows 98 programs are installed there.
You can also use Partition Magic to resize the existing partition without having to reformat, then you can create a second partition to install xp:

Also, why are you wanting to do a dual-boot with 98? If it's for program compatibility, most progams will work fine in xp, about the only thing that won't is system utility software. If you do have problems with a program in xp, you can try running the program in Compatibility Mode:

Crash2100, carmageddon 2 won't work in XP thats why i have dual boot 98 and xp lol
Emmyjr, Personally i wouldn't install 98 and XP on the same partition...
sounds like asking for trouble to me... i dont know how you'd go with drivers and stuff like that...
So i'm going with the comments from Sunray and Fatal_Exception, and the second half of Crash2100's suggestion about Partition magic.
If you do use PQ magic, make sure you backup your important stuff...it's not meant to be destructive, but can be.
Also, make sure you have 98 on the C drive:, it will freak if its not installed there. XP can go anywhere.
go 98 and xp on the same machine!!
