Virus scan uses 100% CPU when running on WinXP

I have McAfee virsus scan V4.5.1 SP1 engine 4.2.60 running on XP-Home when a start up the engine system slows completely I check the Task Manager and the Vshwin32.exe and Mcshield.exe are using all the system CPU. When I End Process on Vshwin32 CPU drops. I have tryed updating .Dat files and I uninstalled and reinstalled still bad. This started a week ago
I have removed it from statup until I can find the problem.

Try doing this

Open mcafee console or virus scan console
click on Scan all disks ( i mean enable it)
Right-click on it and go to properties
go to advanced and you should see CPU utilization. If it is 100% reduce it to the amount you want

Vshwin32.exe is the Real Time scanner for McAfee.  It is suggested that you do not disable it.  

But, I have found that McAfee's RT Scanner is a huge system hog.  One reason I do not recommend it to my clients for home use.  Personally, I find Symantec Norton AV to be the better choice.

Perhaps another Expert can provide you with another possible solution.

I would assume reducing the cpu utilization going to that place ( in my previous comment) , it should be fine. let us see

My virson doesn't have the advanced  CPU utilization. My advanced is ( Enable heuristics scaning )  I can't find anything about "CPU utilization"

I have upgraded the Dat filse but I am not able upgrade to the newer program at this time. I will accept your comment.  Thanks for the info.
