The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Resizing partition - un-bootable?? (Or is it?)

Asked by pr0m3th1us in Windows XP Operating System

Tags: xp, partition

I have 2 partitions on my hard drive. Both are NTFS. I originally had Win 98 on the first and Win XP Home on the second. But recently I clean installed Win XP Pro in the first (removing Win 98). So I now have Win XP Pro on C: and Win XP Home on D:
I am in the process of copying all the "My Documents" files etc. from XP Home to XP Pro, but I have run short of room on the hard drive.
The first partition is 6GB (XP Pro) and the second is 32GB (XP Home).
I went into Partition Magic to resize the first partition, but it warned me that if I go beyond the 1024 cylinder, that partition may become unbootable.

My question is:-

IF I go ahead and resize the partition beyond 1024 cylinders, what problems will that cause in terms of booting into either OS.
I believe that the bootloader is on the first partition. Is there a way to get around this so I can resize the partition to wherever I want it?

What I plan on doing (if I can get around this) is, once everything I need has been copied over to XP Pro, I will delete the second partion and resize the first to fill the whole hard drive so I only have just one partition.

I need some serious help on this as I don't want to mess things up completely.

BTW, I'm poor and can't afford to give this question many points, but my contribution to a good solution could be worth more than a few piddly points. But if I had 500 points I would give them to whoever helps me on this (even if this is something that is so simple a 2 year old could do it - I'm lazy as well as poor :) but that's what this site is for, eh?).

Thanks,

Mike
