Question

problem on shutdown

Asked by: awolfe76

i am running windows xp with all the appropriate updates and fixes. the problem is that on shutdown instead of running through the usual shutdown the os stops due to a program that is still running. the program is "wfet", i have no idea what this is. the end now window pops up and i must click end now in order to do a proper shutdown. the computer will not shutdown completely unless this is clicked. if anyone has any idea on how to fix this i appreciate any help. thanks in advance.

And, it may be an unresponsive, incompatible application which does not know how to end itself. Scan for spyware as well.

Fatal_Exception,

Not sure what could the solution for this be.. Since he was not aware of that program , it could be a possible spyware  which may not solve the issue.. Sometimes it would be frustating to reinstall windows xp just for one program which you have no idea how to solve . Lets see how this one goes

Thanks,
Sunray

go to start -->run and type msconfig
go to the startup tab, and uncheck it there if listed
reboot, and then reboot once more and see if it fixed it

or,

Start>Run>regedit

Find the following branch:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>Windows>Current Version>Run

Don't delete anything you are not sure about though or you could end up with probems.

Also look in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Sofare>Microsoft>Windows>Current Version>Run
but note that these settings affect all users of the computer, not just the one currently signed in.

Is that wfet or wget?

by: awolfe76Posted on 2003-12-22 at 12:32:25ID: 9987272

its wfet. i still have been unable to remove this from the shutdown. i have tried looking in regedit but there is nothing there. also spyware removal tools did not work.

by: pr0m3th1usPosted on 2003-12-22 at 12:52:02ID: 9987405

Go to Start -> Search

Click on "All files and Folders"

Type in wfet* and click Search button.

See what comes up (if anything) to see where the file is located. It may be part of something you have installed recently. When you figure out what it is, try uninstalling / re-installing it.

Hopefully you find out what it is and can fix the problem,

Mike

i have also found two instances of the file in the registry.
hkey_users\software\microsoft\searchassistant\acmru\5603
and
hkey_users\software\microsoft\searchassistant\acmru\5604
is it ok to remove these files from the registry? would that solve the problem?

Try running hijackthis. http://www.webattack.com/download/dlhijackthis.shtml
It sounds as though you have some kind of program installed that redirects certain webpages you type in to a search site.

the acmru refers to the AutoComplete Most Recently Used functions in IE.  So, I think that pr0m is onto something here.

Let us know what it finds.

Hmmm.. I was just thinking over this in my head...

Awolfe - before you found it in the registry, did you search for the file as I had suggested before? The reason I ask is because the key that you found it in is for the Search Assistant (Start -> Search). So it would be normal for it to appear there since you typed it in the Search box.

So my assumption that you have something installed that redirects websites may not be true as I didn't realize at first what that key was pointing to exactly.

FE - I thought I was on to something until now :(

B.T.W. Awolfe, did you find anything when you searched for it with Search Assistant? If not try using other wildcard combinations.

eg's.

wfet*.*
wfet.*
*wfet*
*wfet*.*

etc..

just another thought. this is my dad's computer so i have not used it in a while and he told me of this problem. but also when trying to double click C: it opens a search assistant window rather than opening the drive to view the files and folders. to view these you have to right click and select open. dont know if that deals with this same problem but i thought maybe since you were saying about the search assistant. so far the only place i have found this file is in the registry. thanks again.

hmm...

Have you run the system file checker to verify the integrity of the system files?

Open a Command Shell (dos prompt) and type in:

sfc /purgecache

then

sfc /scannow

Be sure to have your XP cd in the cdrom drive
