Question

shortcuts not working

Asked by: vand3r

When I place a shortcut to a network share on my XP Desktop, it works properly the first time I use it.  A window opens correctly displaying the contents of the network share.  Strangely though the network share icon changes from the default for a shared drive to that of a shared folder.  Any time I try to use the shortcut after the first time i get this error: "The item <network share> that this object refers to has been changed or moved.....  would you like to delete?"  The share has not been changed or moved as it is still accessible through my computer, just not with the shortcut.  If I delete the shortcut and re-create it the same error occurs after working correctly the first time.  It doesn't matter how I create the desktop shortcut, for every method I get this same result.  This does not happen for every desktop shortcut to network shares, some work properly, others work as described.  This problem creating desktop shortcuts to network shares only occurs on this one computer in our network, so I don't think it has to do with the shares themselves...  All help is appreciated.

XP loses Mapped Drives after a few minutes (this process is carried out on the server)

XP does this by default (It's set in the registry) The ususal (default is 15 minutes) and its set in the following key..

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Lanmanserver\parameters

In here you will see autodisconect you can set its value in minutes (The valid value range is -1 to 65535 minutes)

To disable it completely set it to -1

For more info see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;138365 (This also applies to XP)

In windows 2000 Server enviroments you can use the following command also
net config server /autodisconnect:-1

Then On the XP Client

Click Start >Run >Type "gpedit.msc" {enter}

Navigate to

Local Computer Policy >Computer Configuration >Windows Settings >Security Settings >Local Policies >Security Options

Scroll down to

"Microsoft Network Server: Amount of idle time required before suspending session"

The defaiut is 15 minutes change it to 99,999

Thanks, that is good information.  However, my problem is that the shortcuts sometimes stop working altogether, not get disconnected.

I think XP is trying too hard to be tricky.  I think you can use something like this.  Create a new shortcut, and put this in the target:
%windir%\explorer.exe /n, /e, \\server\share
