Question

Display image thumbnails for a video clips folder

Asked by: qiru

Under WIN XP Explorer, I set the folder type to video template for a video clips folder, then choice the thumbnails view mode. But it does not display the image (the first frame of video files) view, still the big WMP 9 icon. How to solve this problem? Thanks.

Hi, qiru,

I've never tried the Video Template folder type, but my video files show a thumbnail of the first frame on their icon with the folder type set to "Pictures"... try that and see if it works for you.

Try deleting the thumbs.db and allowing it to be recreated. . .
It is a hidden file, so you'll need to adjust your folder view to be able to see it:
Click Tools/Folder Options/View
Under Hidden Files and Folders Enable Show hidden files and folders.

Thanks, aniel,

I tried the folder type set to "pictures", but no result.

Hmmm.  Okay, sorry that didn't work, and I don't have any other ideas at the moment... if something occurs to me I'll come back and make a note... in the meantime, I hope someone else can come up with the answer for you, and that you have a fine holiday season and a great 2004.

qiru,

I have a mpg file. I just put that file inside a folder. I donot set any template for that folder.
Now I go inside the folder. Right-click and select view --> thumbnail.

I am able to see the first frame as the picture.

Try this without setting any video template for the folder and check if that would work.

Thanks,
Sunray

This probably won't help with your original question, but I wonder if you have caching of thumbnails turned on, or off.  If you go to Control Panel, Folder Options, click on the View tab, there's an option there to Do Not Cache Thumbnails.  Try checking that option, then go to the folder you're working in, choose to view details (or list or icons...), delete the Thumbs.db file, then choose to view thumbnails again.  Denying your computer the option of saving the thumbnail views in the Thumbs.db file, thus forcing it to re-read the file, might "jar something loose," so to speak.

Thanks, Daniel

I tried it and still not work. The problem is my system cannot create the Thumbs.db file for any video file, but can for picture files.

Hmmm.  That's weird, my XP shows the thumbnail for avi, wmv, and so on.  Wish I could offer something helpful for ya, but there are a lot of guys on here who are a lot sharper in this than I am, so I'm still hopeful someone will pop up with an answer here.  Thanks for getting back to me, and have a fine evening.

This is strange for my xp system:
1. I put several video files in a folder, then view in thumbnails, no thumbs.db generated.
2. Add some picture files into this folder, a thumbs.db file created in this folder and the picture files work currectly, but the video files still be WMP icon.
