u should go for checking two things here:
1) ur USB connections, they can be damamged.
2) boot into the safemode, goto Device Manger, and check for hidden devices that have errors pr problems, if YES then uninstall them, boot inot normal mode, and then try to install any USB device, coz if there are corrupted hidden hardware drivers, they can cause problems with USB devices.
GOOD LUCK!!
why do you think the same issue would happen for an ipod that is connected via 1394 or a similar iriver device connected via usb? other usb devices work ok on this machine - mouse, scanner, lexar memory stick jump drive (shows up as removable media) - but still i have the same issue via 1394 or usb with mass storage devices - so i am not sure if it is a usb issue specifically - any ideas?
ok then i think u need to repiar ur XP to correct the currupted driver files of XP used for USB mass storage devices.

But i suggest u to run sfc \scannow first before doing a Reapir installation.....might be helpful.
remember in both cases u need ur XP CD with u :)
GOOD LUCK!!
