Question

Quick Launch Icons Disappear

Asked by: speedbird000

1. I use Windows XP home edition on my laptop
2. I use the short codes to programmes in a quick launch toolbar for conviennce.
3. Today while i was viewing various desktop features on XP (I hid the desktop icons), all the icons on the quicklaunch tool bar disappeared.
4. I went back to toolbar properties to find that the Quick launch tool bar is still checked which means its active but the icons were not visible.
5. I restarted my machine hoping this would correct itself but it didnt.
6. Then I decided to add all the icons I use and need all over again.
7. However when I went to START PROGRAMS to view the list of programs, I found that MS powerpoint and windows explorer, and Winamp player (not sure how many others) are missing.
8. All my files are intact but I can't find these program icons in the list which in turn doesnt allow me to add them in the quicklaunch menu.
9. The little square icon that displays in the quicklauch to view the desktop too has gone.

I dont know what went wrong on this.

I updated my virus definitions to see if that could be a problem.

Can someone help me.

Thanks....Speedbird

Have you tried moving your mouse cursor over all sections of the Taskbar to see if perhaps the Quick Launch toolbar has become "collapsed" so much that it seems invisible?  Perhaps the Quick Launch toolbar has even moved to another location, next to the Notification Area  (new name for what was called System Tray in previous versions of Windows) rather than the usual location on the left of the Taskbar.

Have you used Windows Explorer to check that the folder where the Quick Launch icons are stored has somehow been moved from its standard location?  Normally, this is:

\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\

have you tried running check disk and system file checker?

Click Start, then Run and type:

chkdsk c: /f

You will get the followng message so hit the y key and reboot

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process.  Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

Then try this go to Start->Run and type

sfc /scannow

that will check for corrupted system files.

If that doesn't work, try using the Windows XP System Restore utility to restore to a time before the problem appeared:
