Question

Cannot Read Characters in Chinese Program

Asked by: doreg28

Hello,

I have Windows XP and I recently installed a Chinese program. The installation went fine, and I loaded it fine as well. However, all the characters in the program are "??" and other weird characters like this: "¹þÂÞÕâÊÇÄÇ×îºÃµÄ¹þÂÞÕâÊÇÄÇ×îº"

Here is a screenshot: http://www.boltdesigns.buildtolearn.net/files/screenshot2.jpg

Is there a additional program or anything that will help me to view these chinese characters?
I have already tried installing NJStar, but the outcome isn't great. There are still some weird characters.
This program is very important to me, and any help is greatly appreciated!!

Thank you for your time,
Tony

Hello doreg28 =)
Gotot Control Panel>DATE TIME REGIONAL LANGUAGE OPTIONS>REGIONAL AND LANGUGAE OPTIONS> in the opened window goto LANGUAGES section, u should have a check mark again  INSTALL LANGUAGE FOR EAST ASIAN LANGUAGES, if not then check it and hit APPLY, u will need ur XP CD in order to install the language support.

!! GOOD LUCK !!

Thank you for your comments SheharyaarSaahil

however I have already installed that, and I think that only display the chinese characters in Internet Explorer.

Help me please :(

ok then u have to do another process now, and how to do that, for that see the below link, it will surely work for u :-)

Installing East Asian Language Support Under Windows XP:

!! GOOD LUCK !!

also try to insatll some MORE chinese fonts coz it can be possible that the fonts used by above software has not been installed on ur system, so u will need to install that perticular chinese font in order to view them correctly !!

by: doreg28Posted on 2004-01-21 at 20:26:58ID: 10171215

Again thank you for your comments SheharyaarSaahil,
however I also installed and went through that process before, and it still didnt help me.
All that did was allow me to type chinese characters, and view them in Internet Explorer.

What I am looking for is a patch for XP, or an additional program that will allow me to view chinese characters within a software. Do you know such additional program?

by: SheharyaarSaahilPosted on 2004-01-21 at 20:35:49ID: 10171243

So if u have already gone through the above process, means u have Chinese installed and u can view or write chinese characters in ur Xp softwares, Right ??

That's mean the problem is with only this particular software, and if YES then this must be a suitable font problem, im sure that the software is using that font which is not installed on ur system and that's why it is not displaying it correctly !!

by: doreg28Posted on 2004-01-23 at 18:10:16ID: 10189309

Yes, I can write chinese characters in the program, but I tried installing a few more different fonts, but it the program will shows funny characters.

I'm just guessing, but is there any font packs I can download in order to read it?

by: SheharyaarSaahilPosted on 2004-01-23 at 20:12:55ID: 10189621

Well u can have thousands of them on hundreds of websites, just make a search on Google, but the problem is that u don't know that which particular font is used in that software, so installing different chinese fonts will only help if u can get that particular font to display the characters correctly :-|

I had the same problem as you from the first day xp was installed on my machine.  This problem plagued me until, well, 2 minutes ago.  And found 2 solutions which yeilds different results.

1) Go to Njstar website, and find the support page.  It will tell you that xp users need to go to control panel, regional and language setting...blah blah blah...just like the people above had suggested.  Here's the tricky part.  Most of us can't read.  In the Njstar webpage it actually said to "UNCHECK" the east asian text support option.  With this off, and a reboot, you will find that most of the programs will let you read the characters the way it should be.  However, programs like Winamp, and Winamp3's playlist, would still not let you read the chinese characters.  It would still be juba jaba.  This solution should be the one to work for you.

2) This is the solution I found after a few testing.  Go to Control Panel -> regional...blah blah blah... up to the menu where you check/uncheck that east asian text option.  But make sure it's checked this time and then click on the Advance Tab at the top...(right of the Lanugage Tab).  At the part where it saids Languge for non-unicode programs, it should have the language  English (United States) selected.  Change that to one of the many Chinese Options.  ie. Chinese (Taiwan).  Do a reboot, and now you would find that programs like Winamp 2.XX version's playlist would be able to convert the juba jaba to chinese characters.  However, Winamp3 on the other hand might not be able to decode the filename and thus cannot access the file.  So this method might have the programe you want to use, not being able to load the chinese text at all.  Also the programs that opened up from the first solution that let you see the chinese character, might(well most likely) won't let you see the characters if you use the this solution.

well, after a few more testing, it seems I found a extended solution to solution 1

with the asian text option off, go to the advance tab.
Under Code Page Conversion tables, you should see anything related to east asian text is unchecked.

Go through the list, and manually check everything that is related to chinese, including the taiwan ones, just in case.

After I did that I was able to read chinese even in the Winamp 2.XX version's playlist.  So in theory it should open up a few more programs allowing you to read chinese.  Hope all this helps...

Thank you very much one0one,
your second solution worked very well :)

however, instead of choosing Chinese (Taiwan), I needed to choose Chinese (PRC) for the program to show the correct characters.

Again thank you very much for your responce :)
