The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. Windows XP Home Edition - explorer.exe takes up 100% CPU usage

Dear Java Gurus,

I am having a problem with my Windows XP Home Edition.  I have read other questions in the topic area and have tried what they suggested to no avail.  

Two problems:

1.)  Every time I try to play music from Windows Media Player, when I am typing on Microsoft Word, or even when I'm looking through folders in my computer (I do these one at a time), the computer lags for about 5 minutes before it resumes it's normal status.  When I Ctrl+Alt+Del to get the Windows Task Manager, explorer.exe takes up 100% CPU usage.  When I check the graph under the Performance tab, the graph spikes up to the 100% mark and stays there.  I have run Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc. and have found nothing.

2.)  I have several .avi files on my computer.  When I try to rename the file (this happens to only certain ones), Windows will popup an error message, shut down the window I was looking at, the Taskbar will disappear and then reappear, and then I have to attempt to rename the file again.

Everything I have tried does not seem to work.  I usually end up restarting my computer.  I have defraged the C drive, etc.  That doesn't seem to do anything :(
