Question

Unable to open/merge .reg files. [Getting error msge.]

Asked by: riprap1951

[Windows XP Home Edition]
In the past, I've made a lot of use of the .reg files in the 'tweaks section' of websites like Kellys-Korner, Doug Knox's site, etc. But lately, when I try to load a .reg file, all I get is this error msge:

                  "Cannot import C:\DOCUME~1\<various chars. follow>\~1.reg : The specified file is not a registry script.You can only import
                  binary registry files from within the registry editor."

     I have opened the .reg files in question w/ Notepad and looked at the syntax, but don't see anything obviously wrong. Also, I have tried going into the editor itself, navigating to the key in question, then clicking on File>Import>and the file in question. When I try this, I get exactly the same results! This has happened with .reg files from several different tweak sites....Any ideas?

Thanks for your time & attention to detail.

Try this

open the Registry file in notepad

Intstead on "Reg.. 5.00" put REGEDIT4 and save it in ANSI format

To GaganJawa,
  How about this detail: I've gotten into the habit, before I even attempt to load/merge the .reg file, of opening it w/ Notepad and appending some kind of explanatory comment to it (and preceding my comment with a semi-colon). Sometimes I place this comment above the "Regis~rsion 5.0" title line of the file. Could this be messing me up? Does the title need to be the very first line in file?
[I'll read replies in a.m....later]
Thanks for your time & effort ((-;
