Question

XP will not boot after software update

Asked by: edhinfl

I am not very familiar with XP.  I just allowed an automatic system update to run on my son's computer, which I assumed was from Microsoft.  It took a very long time.  When the update completed and the system attempted to reboot, I got the message "The procedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll" from Isass.exe or Lsass.exe, I can't really tell which, and the system will not reboot.  What can I do?

Try this
reboot your machine.once the manufacturer's logo comes and goes , press F8
You would get the boot menu
select "last known good configuration"
and press "enter"

check if it would work

This did not work.  The message comes up immediately after the logo goes away. I even tried pressing f8 almost constantly to try to get in during a possible delay.

Here is what resolved that error message.

1. Using ur windows XP disk, boot to recovery console

To start the Windows Recovery Console, use any of the following methods:

Start your computer by using the Windows Setup floppy disks or the Windows CD-ROM. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press F10 or press R to repair, and start the Windows Recovery Console.

Using the Command Console
After you start the Windows Recovery Console, you receive the following message:
Microsoft Windows(R) Recovery Console

The Recovery Console provides system repair and recovery functionality.
Type EXIT to quit the Recovery Console and restart the computer.

1: C:\WINDOWS

Which Windows Installation would you like to log onto
(To cancel, press ENTER)?

After you enter the number for the appropriate Windows installation, you are prompted to enter the Administrator account password. Type the passwd, if you have any otherwise Hit <ENTER>

At C:\windows, prompt type the following commands and hit Enter after each command

cd system32\config
ren security security.old
ren SAM SAM.old
cd \
cd windows\repair
copy security c:\windows\system32\config
copy SAM c:\windows\system32\config
Exit

The computer will reboot

If this does not fix the problem,

Do a repair install of windows XP which will not delete your data but uninstall the windows updates on the system, uninstalling the problem update as well.

To do a repair install of windows XP,

1. Start your computer by using the Windows XP CD-ROM. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen,
Hit ENTER to Install Windows now

2. Accept the agreement by pressing F8

3. Hightlight the Windows XP to repair and Press R on keyboard

4. It will start repairing windows XP and complete the process in 40-50 min

All the best

Alex

I had to download the floppy boot disks to get this started. I havce a question: What is it expecting when it asks what Windows installation I want to log on to? I have no clue what this means unless it is the product number for the XP software.  HELP!  Thanks
Ed

This basically refers to more than one installation to choose from.

Generally if you have only one installation of windows, its shown as
1 C:\Windows

Press 1 to select the installation and Hit ENTER

If you have two, its shown as

1 C:\Windows
2. D:\WinXPP

like that.....

Good Luck

What a mess!  The Command Console repair didn't work so I tried the install repair. I got this message:
The following value in the .SIF file used by setup is corrupted or missing:
Value 0 on the line in section [SourceDisksFiles]
with the key "SP1.cab"

Setup cannot continue.

Suggestions?
Thanks, Ed

Hi

1. This error appears when you try to install an SP1 version of WindowsXP after
booting from the non-SP1 boot floppies. To resolve this error download the SP1 boot
floppies and start the install again.

2. Copy the txtsetup.sif from the CD to setup disk 1

3. set bios to boot from the cd and started the setup by booting from the xp cd
