[If there's a better forum in which to float this query, I'd appreciate re-direction ((-;]
I'm in process of building dual boot sys, and need some help.
Installed new hd [Maxtor ATA/133 80GB] on primary cable as master; relegated orig hd [Samsung ATA/100 40GB] as slave, same cable.
Installed XP on primary hd. It's running just fine as of right now.
Formatted [w Partition Commander] second hd in Reiser, and installed Mandrake 9.2. The install went o.k. When asked, near end of process, where I wanted the boot file placed, I chose "root". [NOT "MBR"].
Then I went into C:\boot. ini, and got to editing. The default file read:
[boot loader]
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdi
sk(0)parti
tion(2)\WI
NDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)par
tition(2)\
WINDOWS="M
icrosoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
I changed it to read:
[boot loader]
timeout=15
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdi
sk(0)parti
tion(2)\WI
NDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)par
tition(2)\
WINDOWS="M
icrosoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)par
tition(0)\
LINUX="Man
drake 9.2" /fastdetect
Here's the present problem, the one I can't figure out [ignorance on my part no doubt]:
When I turn the machine on, an official-looking choice-of-os screen comes up, with the desired alternatives. I arrow down to the Linux version, select it, and immediately get a long error msge that starts out, "Windows could not start because of a computer disk configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk....." [etc etc] I don't know what to do to fix this. Because I AM NOT SURE WHICH PARTITION# THE LINUX BOOT FILES ARE INSTALLED TO, I did try editing the Linux entry in boot.ini to "partition(1)", but that didn't work either, and was just shot in the dark 'cause I don't know where on my secondary hd the Linux boot files are! Heck, I don't even know if the boot files for Mandrake are on the primary hd or the secondary! [When I selected "root", which root?]
At any rate, I'm looking forward to invaluable help from one of the XP wizards out there.
Thanks for your time & attention to detail.
