Greetings!
When you say you've tried doing both an upgrade and a fresh install, are either of these being done with Windows 98 booted, and you just insert the CD, and it prompts you to choose from 1 of 4 options to continue?
If so, you should consider booting to the WinXP CD itself, and not Windows 98.
It is possible to install with Windows 98 running, but you won;t be re-writing the registry hive, which may very well be where your problem lies.
Booting to the bootable XP CD will ensure that a fresh new registry hive will be created, removing a possible corrupt one from the previous OS.
There is no mention here of available disk space - are you sure you have at least 5gb free for this installation?
You are best advised to have at least 10gb to work with, as there won;t be a lot left after an XP installation for the programs you may wish to use to be ijstalled as well. a 6gb drive would be a tight fit, but still could work, just tight.
Also, if you have anything less than 128mb of RAM, this is asking for trouble. 64 will work, but some feature will not function, or may malfunction (according to MS).
If you need further instructions for setting up the system to boot from a CD, let us know :).
