What proxy are you trying to use (your ISP's proxy or some other ?) ? Do you have the problem for all pages (try opening google.com or yahoo.com) ? Is the problem resolved by just disabling the proxy, or do you have to take other steps ?

Another thought : Are the proxy settings (address, port number) all set ok ? Double-check if necessary.

To check that the proxy exists, go to Start > Run, and type "cmd" (without the quotes) and click OK. Now at the command prompt, type the following :

ping proxy.domain.com

(replacing proxy.domain.com with the correct proxy address of course) and press ENTER. If this gives you no timeouts, then the proxy server is on-line. If you get timeouts, then try this command :

nslookup proxy.domain.com

(again replacing proxy.domain.com with the correct proxy address) and press ENTER. If you don't get an IP address, then this is an indication for a DNS error. This means that you either misspelt the address, or it isn't available on the DNS server you're using (which generally means the address isn't used).

Dear Juggodish,

As per the previous comment, we need more information. Is this proxy server provided by your ISP (if so, what ISP?), or it on your local network (if so, what name, version etc).

You should check the address and port that are used within the Internet Explorer options, and make sure that IF the proxy is on your local network, you setup the 'LAN Settings' area, not just enter the proxy settings into the dial-up properties - use Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings and enter the details.

If you are entering a DNS address (proxy.freeserve.com / proxy.homenetwork.local) try entering the IP address manually (find this by going into the command prompt, ping proxy.freeserve.com and then noting the IP address) and see if it makes a connection.

Kind Regards,

Andrew Willett

the probelm is solved by simply  disabling the proxy.  i tried a couple of different proxies and the all did the same thing. and i tried looking at a few different pages, none worked.  i got the proxies of of some list on the net, cant remember the name of it now.  i pinged the proxy  210.252.8.2  and the statistics came back as 4 packets sent , 4 packets recieved.  that should mean it works right? and its set to port 80.  can my ISP block use of proxies?

  I appreciate the help.

Just confirming that the proxy 210.252.8.2:80 you mentioned does work (for me). I would be very surprised that ISP would block proxies because there's not really a distinction between a proxy and a regular web server (traffic-wise that is).

To make sure that your machine is configured right for the use of proxies, try your ISP's proxy (they should have one - check with them for the address and port, on their site eg.). And get back to us after trying this ...

i didnt try the ISP's proxy but i did try some other one and they worked but made the internet connection really slow is that normal?  can i speed it up in any way?

by: Infinity08Posted on 2004-02-16 at 16:14:51ID: 10377475

proxies make loading a web page slower. That's because all traffic has to go through that proxy. So, best is to choose a proxy that's in your (geographical) neighbourhood, like your ISP's proxy.

btw, you don't really need a proxy, but i guess you know this.

You got it sorted then ? Sometimes you've got to search a while to find a good working proxy server ... Guess you noticed that :)
