One of my friends is trying to access a folder of mine that is shared at a public IP address,
but everytime he types in \\aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd\MyDrive (real public address is not shown here),
he gets a Windows dialog that states
"\\aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd\MyDrive
is not available. There are currently no logon servers available
to service the logon request."
I have tested the accessibility of this drive from several computers at my home and at my
office and it works fine on all of them. I'm guessing that since my friend's laptop is owned
by the company he works for that it is configured to contact some "logon server" for authentication
purposes when he tries to access any shared drive. If my guess is right, then it is no surprise that
he can't contact the login server at his work since we are trying to do this while he is home.
My questions are:
1. What is the cause of this error message (is my guess right? if not why does the OS try to contact
a login server?)
2. How is his computer configured so that this problem occurs?
3. How can his computer or my computer's shared drive be modified so that he can access my
shared drive without getting this error message.
Thanks for your help.
