Dear Norbones,
Congratulations on upgrading to Windows XP from Windows 95. Superb choice.
To show these files, if that is really necessary, use this procedure:
Start -> Control Panel -> Switch to Classic View (on the left) -> Folder Options -> 'View' Tab -> select 'Show Hidden Files & Folders' -> UNtick 'Hide Protected Operating System Files'
And there you have it.
You may find that files that were included in Windows 95 have been removed in Windows XP because they aren't needed, like 'autoexec.bat'.

I'll give you an example of what's happening.
I right clicked the Start button and chose Explore/Programs/Accessori
I now realize that the files and folders can be managed by simply clicking the start button and drag and drop or delete, etc. without opening Windows Explorer like I had to do in W95.
I agree with you techxero, XP is a great thing. Another great upgrade was getting this laptop with 2.8GHz Pentium and 512 MB RAM. Sure beats the #%*! out of the 166MHz, 64MB RAM desktop PC I was using.
PS. I still love my old PC!
