Cannot modify registry and msconfig?

Yesterday, I can't modify registry and msconfig :( What happend with my PC? How can I solve this problem? Thanks all! I'm using windows XP.

    When I choose start>run>msconfig and click on the "startup" tab, there are many prg. entries from prgs. that's been removed from the pc, and some prgs. have double entries. How do I remove these?

What exactly happens when you open them?

Task Manager, MSCONFIG, or REGEDIT disappears while opening:

How do you go to the registry, via regedit or regedt32?

Is it that you are not being allowed access to the registry or system config utility, or that you just cannot modify them...??  

Can you go into safe mode (F8 at startup > Advanced Startup Options) and access them..???
