Question

Remote Desktop Randomly Non-Responsive / Disconnects

Asked by: Dexstar

I'm connecting from Win2K Pro to my XP Pro workstation at my office through a VPN.  I have no problems connecting or logging in, but once I do, periodically the connection seems to "lock up" for 3 to 10 seconds and then recover.  For example, I'll be typing and the letters stop appearing, the mouse cursor doesn't change when moved and nothing else on the screen updates.  Then, a few seconds later, the letters will finally appear on the screen and everything goes back to normal.

This happens once every few minutes or so, and it is really frustrating.  Furthermore, every once in a while, it won't recover and will disconnect me from my remote session.  When that happens, I just have to reconnect and login again, and then it works (until it locks up / disconnects again a few minutes later).

I had been using this system without any problems for several months, and then recently this started to happen.  I'll give points to anyone who provides me with a solution, or to who helps me diagnose the source of the problem.

Thanks in advance.

@gemarti:

Thanks for your reply.  I'm not sure if that is going to help or not.  It was working fine before, and I didn't change any settings.  Also, it wouldn't explain the periodic disconnects.  However, I reconnected with the settings set to 28.8 (even know I am on a cable modem), and we'll see if that disconnects any less often.

@gemarti:

I traced the problem down to be being an issue with my cable modem.  Since you were the only one who even tried to answer my question, the points are yours.  Thanks for your help.

Well, I should've dug deeper before assuming it was a problem with RDC.  Then I noticed that file xfers would get hosed too.  So, I just started pinging a computer on the VPN side with a 1 byte packet repeatedly.  After a few minutes, it would drop packets for a few seconds and then resume.  I had my friend at another location repeat the experiment and he never got any packet loss.

Then he started to ping me directly, while I was pinging him directly, and we got packet loss at the same time.  I removed my LinkSys router from the setup, and the problem still happened.  I switched computers on my side, and it still happened.  The only piece left is the cable modem, so that has to be it.  :)

This is just proof that even unfruitful efforts can be rewarded on this site, so it pays to at least try...  :)
