Hi bill,

Once in recovery console prompt, C:\

Type
     CHKDSK /R

This will scan the drive for errors and repair them autimatically.
If it hangs in the middle, it means drive is bad.

To do a repair installation on the drive,

here is what u need to do,

1. At the welcome to setup screen (from where u choose Recovery console option), Hit Enter to install windows.

2. Press F8 to accept license agreement

3. It shud detect the existing installed copy of windows so that we can perform a repair on it.
If you see your installation listed below hightlighted, press R to repair and follow the prompts

This will repair the windows without loosing your data and stuff.

If you do not see any windows installation listed, chances are that your drive is damaged.

In such case, you need to take the drive to another computer (probably at a hardware shop). Plug in there as slave
and run easy recovery tool from www.ontrack.com. That will backup your data safely from the drive.

Then you can format the drive using another computer and reinstall windows.

All the best

Alex

Thanks

I've tried chkdsk /R and I'm guessing since it takes about a hour to run that the drive is bad, I will try what you suggested above when I get home tonight and let you know tomorrow or hopefully tonight from my working computer, if this works

Thanks

On Microsoft support page it says I will lose data if I run a repair installation if XP came preinstalled from the manufacturer.  Which it did, Dell.  But if you read the article on Microsfot support it tells you about this and but then at the end of this is says that this probelm was corrected in Service pack 1.  I don't know why they would tell you about this proble if it was correct.  I hate to be annoying but I just don't want to lose my data if I run a repair installation.  So is there a chance I will?

Thanks

Bill

THIS IS MORE COMMON THAN YOU THINK WITH THE SYSTEM FILE.

Chance are your data is safe(such as Word Doc's, and the like), however it is not the data that is the problem.  It is the 10+ hrs waiting to load all your programs on. For me the 50+ programs 20hrs or so.  Most of us have backups.

How I fixed the problem.  The Idea to trigger Windows to give you another option when Installing Windows, Repair.

1.  Start to install another OS (win XP).  with the Windows CD, you may need to adjust motherboard settings to allow the CD to start up first and not the drive.

2.  Proceed to Install Windows another copy same partation, without actually do it.  Go. as far as you can.

3.  Restart Install, again and go thru with the process.

4.  Use Same User name.

5.  Keep tring Steps 2-4, It will work again, after about 2hrs of messing with it.

This happened twice to me in 4 yrs.  No other Crashes,  Expect Windows to majorly crash once a year, elsewise its fine.

Solution buy two harddrives with a removable rack  ~$14 each one.  If one dies you still have a working computer.  I can retrieve data from one using a Linex CD (such as Knoppix)

Alex,

I tried to do a repair installation but the is no option to do Repair.

So it looks like I need to reinstall XP and copy my data to another computer.  Unless you can think of anything else I can try

Thanks

Bill,

This was something I already expected. you are not getting repair option because the current installation of windows and drive may be corrupted.

Try this now,

1. Boot with the CD

2. At the welcome to setup screen, Choose Install Windows now. Hit Enter

3. Accept the agreement

4. Select the partition to install windows. Most probably C: drive. Hit Enter on it.

5. if it gives you the screen options of choosing a format with NTFS or Quick then choose Leave the current file system intact,
if you get such option, If you don't get and format is the only option to continue then quit installation and try my earlier
suggestion to recover data from the Easy recovery tool.

6. After choosing leave the current file system intact, it will ask you where you want to install windows,
By deafult, windows will show C:\windows as installation location,

Press ESC (Escape) key to select a new folder
    In the box, specify \WINXP

 (Don't forget to put \ (blackSlash) )

7. Hit Enter and the installation will continue

8. During the setup, when it ask you to specify a user name, choose a name what you don't have in old windows.
If you choose the same name, your user data will be overwritten. Hence choose a new name and continue setup.

All the best

Alex

P.S. If setup hangs during the installation, it wud most probably because of the corrupt drive.

AlexJ,

The drive is more than likely fine,  Windows is corrupted not the drive. As I mensioned before, "The Idea to trigger Windows to give you another option when Installing Windows, Repair".

wifrbr2,

I have had this problem happen to me on two different drives of mine.  No need to re-Install Windows try the procedure I listed above, the worst case that will happen is re-install windows by default.  The computer I am using right now was repaired in this way, I didn't lose programs or data.

Hi Bill,

we have not heard from you. did u try my last suggestion posted above??

waiting for your response.

Alex

JP,

The method u have posted was a Hit and Trial one which incidently worked on your machine.
He is not getting the Repair option as he mentioned.

If he start installing another copy of windows, windows setup will ask him to specify an installation folder
and he has to specify one to continue. That's what I suggested above.

If he choose the same user name like u suggested above, his C:\documents and settings\<user> folder will be overwritten with the new default data, which he obviously do not wish.

(You posted)
<<
2.  Proceed to Install Windows another copy same partation, without actually do it.  Go. as far as you can.

After the first install, windows setup advances towards installing devices (39 minutes remaining), It will not
give him chance to repeat steps 2-4. Hence what accidently worked for you in 4 years luckily, is unfortunately not the authentic method to install windows.
method to install windows.

No, I didn't try it yet, I wasn't home all weekend.  I am going to try to do this tonight after work.  I will let you know how this turns out.  Hopefully I will let you know tonight from my working computer.

Also after I do this wil have to re-install all my other program, Microsoft Money, Norton, Ad-Ware, Itunes, etc

Thanks

Bill

Alex,

Also whenI re-install XP, to the \WINXP folder will this mean I have 2 copies installed, 1 in c:\winxp & 1 in c:\windows

Thanks

by: wifrbr2Posted on 2004-03-22 at 23:06:17ID: 10655543

Alex,

It worked.
I installed the new XP in the new folder XPWIN, then once I had that working I just used the directions from microsoft support
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307545.
To copy the files from the XP in folder XPWIN to the corrupt/missing files in the XP in the windows folder.  Now that I have the XP in the windows folder working how do I un-install the one  in the folder I created XPWIN?

Thanks again for all your help

Bill

by: AlexJPosted on 2004-03-23 at 03:10:12ID: 10656525

Gr8 !!!

Bill, Iam happy for you. And what u did is amazing too.
But there was no need of copying the registry hives from XPWIN folder to WINDOWS folder.
It just got windows working in WINDOWS folder but u still need to reinstall programs to make their entries in the
new registry.

Yes, You can delete the XPWIN folder now.

Go to Start->My Computer->Local disk C:->RightClick XPWIN folder and Click Delete. Say Yes to delete.
It will be done.

Also,

Click Start->RightClick My Computer->properties->Click Advanced tab->Click settings under startup and recovery->Click Edit

The boot.ini will open in notepad.

Under [Operating systems]
Delete the line which has \XPWIN

save the file and exit
Reboot

Then you will have only one windows installation left.

Alex

P.S. Thanks for the points :))
