Or possibly you are deleting from the file open view with preview enabled? Try changing the view or closing the MSOffice programs and using the file manager (explorer.exe) to delete them. If that doesn't work, can you delete them in safe mode?
Just a few thought ... perhaps someone else actually knows what's going on here. Out of interest, what attributes do these files have?
