remove HDD without shutdown?

My Friend plug his HDD Drive into my pc while windows XP was running and i was surprised, i know that i must shut down the PC First then plug the HDD ?

how did he do that and what are the steps ? and how can i safely remove my slave hard disk without shutdown windows XP ?? can i do that with the safe removal icon?? and where can i get it ?? plz tell me the steps to do this.
