Raid 0 = Mirror, Raid 1 = Stripe..

A mirror provides redundancy and fail over in case of hard drive failure and a stripe is for speed, as data is retrieved from both disks simultaneously...

So you will need to add a drive and use Raid 1 for Striping to get your speed..

good explanation LeeTudor but i want to install it on my system. I alredy have everything installed and not willing to format the drive or anything like that. I am willing to buy another hard drive with better 8MB buffer and more space.
1) how will i install this raid 0 (without doing anything nasty to my current drive or windows)
2) will it make my performace better? although the new harddrive is much better than the original one i have now.....

One thing though, if you are going to be using Raid, and the OS to do this, it will essentially be a software RAID..  You will need to convert your disks to dynamic (from basic) if you want RAID, and this is all done via your Disk Management Console.   Once you do this, the array is easily built using the same console..

You will get better performance by going with RAID 0 even if you have one slower drive.  Your performance will be as good as the slowest drive, but by letting your system read and write to two drives at the same time, you'll increase performance.

If you are looking to do RAID 0, then you will have to either reinstall, or find a way to backup your current config and then restore it to the RAID 0 once it is created.  You can't do it on the fly as far as I know because you have to split everything over the two drives.  You can do RAID 1 without reinstalling, but you won't have the performance gain, just a redundancy gain, which is the whole idea of RAID.

Oops..  yes..  got my 0 and 1's mixed up, did I not..??

Raid 0 = Stripe, Raid 1 = Mirror..   I stand corrected, thanks Eagle....

No problem.  I stuck my foot in my mouth by going toe to toe with my manager over RAID 0 and 1 and ended up being backwards. Makes sense though.  RAID 0 offers no redundancy so Redundant Array of Independent Disks is a misnomer so RAID 0 seems fitting.

Yea..  I usually only use RAID 5, so sometimes the lower order RAIDs get confusing....  :)

The asker mentioned that their motherboard has RAID capabilities, so I assume they will be using that rather than a software RAID.

by: shaiberg1Posted on 2004-04-24 at 03:30:10ID: 10906856

i have hardware capabilities of it in my mobo, but i want to install raid, now if i got it correctly i have to split all my information on 2 drives.... enable raid from my mobo and then what??

by: Fatal_ExceptionPosted on 2004-04-24 at 05:30:54ID: 10907121

I have just reviewed the docs for your motherboard and RAID..  If you do not have the manual, please dnload it here:

http://www.giga-byte.com/Download/Download.asp?DownloadPath=/MotherBoard/FileList/Manual/manual_promise_raid_20276.pdf

It is fully self explanatory and will guide you through the RAID creation..  But I would like to note a couple of items here..

First, it appears that you will have to reload your OS after you create your SATA Raid 0..  The manual and the board's RAID utility explains how to take an existing data drive and create a mirror, but not a stripe..  It only deals with fresh drives.

Second, remember that if you loose either one of these drives, everything will be gone, so make sure you do good backups, if you data is being stored on the Striped Array..

Good luck..
