Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

I have been receiving the error message "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." everytime I right click a file or when I'm browsing the directories of my hard drive. I have ran Norton Antivirus with the latest updates, adaware and spybot with no luck. The error signature it gives me is:

AppName: explorer.exe       AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106       ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0       Offset: 04446fe8

for ModName, xvid.dll and nvcpl.dll also show up at times.
I also have a hijack log if anyone needs to see:

I've tried deleting the files sirbounty recommended but I still receive the error message. I did make a new user profile and it seems that I don't receive the errors anymore on it. Is there any way to fix it on my original user profile?
xvid.dll and nvcpl.dll are related to the Xvid video codec and an nVidia control pannel driver.  You might remove Xvid and update your video card drivers as something to try as well.

SheharyaarSaahil, what makes you think it is a corrupt profile? Did I miss something?
>> I did make a new user profile and it seems that I don't receive the errors anymore on it. Is there any way to fix it on my original user profile?
Ah, so I did miss something.  Nevermind.
Thanks for all your advice, I've decided on just making a new profile.
Thanx and Good Luck :)
Just one more comment, you should remove the wupdater.exe, it is a key loggger, spyware, and NOT part of the Windows Update executable.  Check here for details:
http://forums.techguy.org/showthread.php?threadid=191212&a916a5fd0a34d55e9f6ab8e65aad2172
I fixed the Right-click "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem ..." problem on my Windows XP Pro SP1 system by debugging the Registry and deleting a key under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers.  In my case the offending key was "MKSSI Windows Explorer Extension", but in your case it may be something else.

Before tackling the problem, I can at least suggest this to reduce the pain: in Windows Explorer, click Tools | Folder Options, select the tab View, scroll down and fill the checkbox "Launch folder windows in a separate process."  Now at least your Desktop doesn't have to redraw every time a rightclick crashes.  Is that a little better?

Here's the general method I would suggest; but beware that editing the Registry is reputed to be a ballsy thing to do, so be sure you know where your backups are.

Start | Run | regedit | OK

If you navigate Home, Downarrow, Rightarrow (wait for expand), Downarrow, you should be positioned on HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\* (that's right, the key is named "*" -- asterisk, or star).  Click File | Export, navigate to the folder where you want to keep this little backup (Desktop is OK), and the filename I suggest is "HCR_slide_star" -- with default ".reg" filetype.  Note at the bottom that "Selected branch" is checked, and that it is indeed HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\* in the textbox, and click Save.

Now here is where we start to stick our neck out a bit. With the "*" key selected/highlighted, click menu Edit | Rename, and change the name of this key from "*" to "*-WAS".  [If you want to practice this on a working system, you'll see that your Windows Explorer rightclick popup menu becomes all plain after you do this -- no WinZip menu choices, etc.; rename it back to "*" and your extended rightclick menu is back.  Get it?]  Now launch a fresh Windows Explorer, and rightclick on a file icon.  Do you get a (rather plain) popup menu, or do you still get the error "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem ..."?  In the latter case, just rename "*-WAS" back to "*", exit regedit, and look elsewhere; the fix for your problem isn't here.

But if you DID get rid of the nasty crash, now you can dig deeper to find out what the offensive key is.

Your "*" is still renamed to "*-WAS", right?  We'll leave that copy of the "*" branch alone, and bring in another copy to play with.  Click File | Import, and select the little backup file "HKCR_slide_star.reg" we made just a little while ago, and click Open.  At this point, if you rightclick a filename in WE, the problem should be back.  Satisfy your curiosity, or save yourself the trouble -- up to you.  Anyway, click the [+] boxes to expand "*", then expand "shellex", and then expand "ContextMenuHandlers" so now you see a list of keys that resembles some lines on your rightclick menu (if it were working).  Now remember "*-WAS" is still your unmodified original, and you have a backup file on your desktop, so we can begin open-heart surgery here under the living, breathing, pulsing "*" key.  In whatever order you think is most suspect, click on each key under "ContextMenuHandlers", and delete them one at a time, either with Edit | Delete, or just use your Del key; and each time, re-try rightclicking a file in WE.  By process of elimination, you should find the stinker.  If you manage to delete them all and rightclick STILL crashes, then your problem isn't here: delete the whole butchered "*" branch, and rename "*-WAS" back to "*", and look elsewhere.

If you DO find an offending key (and assuming there was only just one), you want to get all the other falsely-deleted ones back now, don't you?  In this case delete the whole butchered "*" branch, and rename "*-WAS" back to "*", and now delete just the one black sheep key.

If there are actually two or more keys that are sick, your surgical techniques will have to be more elaborate; but I think you're smart enough to figure out that game now.

I'd be thrilled to know whether or not this method helps anyone else.
i am reciving below message when right duble click on folders wirh word documents or others bUT when i click left butoon of the mouse then Explore i can retrive all files.

(Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close we are sorry for the inconvenience)

what to do..i need help please.
This is a SP2 issue.  SP2 includes DEP "Data Execution Prevention."
Many codecs and drivers are affected by this security measure, Notably DIVX, XVID, and NVidia.
If you have a NVidia video card, get the latest  NVidia drivers from www.nvidia.com.

You should install the newest DIVX drivers (v5.2.1) from www.divx.com they include the newest XVID codec (Koepi's latest compiled version), and are fully compatible with Windows XP Service Pack 2.

If wanting to fix the user profile instead of scrapping and starting over this is probally worth a try.

Scroll to the bottom of this post for what worked for me, keep reading if you like long-winded stories.

I was getting a similar error, not when right clicking, but searching.

Any search I attempted got the "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." error myself only referencing a failure in Srchui.dll (Search User Interface Dynamic Link Library)

As most .dll failures are due to a corruption of the dll itself I set off to overwrite my current Srchui.dll with the original.

Thank you pklammer for the "Launch folder windows in a separate process" tip, it DID make my testing less painful!

This was hindered by both the fact that I wanted the SP2 version and that I couldn't search to find the file on my harddrive.

Microsoft shed some light with thier "A File That Is Required to Run Search Companion Cannot Be Found" article at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;319949.  I found this by searching Microsoft for just "Srchui.dll".

The article recommended to (re)install Srchasst.inf, to replace the missing Srchui.dll.  My hopes were that it would repair my damanged one.

Doing so I was prompted for the SP2 CD, I didn't have one as I installined via Windows Update.  I didn't seem to have a full unzipped directory in C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$ either.

I finally decided to try to reinstall SP2.  I didn't wanna wait for CD and of course having it installed already it no longer appears in Windows Update.  After some searching I DL'd the "Windows XP Service Pack 2 for IT Professionals and Developers" from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en  (I search MS for "SP2 download")

Some recommendations for (re)installing SP2 this way:
Do a manual System Restore Checkpoint.  Windows Update version will do one for you, this way won't.
Restart when finished.  The "Restart computer now" isn't grayed out like on the WU version.  I didn't delay and wouldn't recommend you doing it either.

I reinstalled it and held my breath during reboot.  I got a "MSL Failed" (or something like that) error on login.  I'm guessing that it was trying to migrate settings from SP1 but couldn't find any.  I've rebooted once since and it's NOT reoccuring.

My profile was in tact except a few arbitrary changes.  I had to redelete the WMP shortcut from my quicklaunch.  I had to redelete the "Set Program Access and Defaults" shortcut from the root of the start menu.  I had to reuncheck the "Display detele confirmation dialog" in Recycling Bin properties.  That's all I've found so far.

I CAN SEARCH!  Both local and network drive searches work like a charm.

Things I have verified so far that were maintained in my profile are:
Folder view preferences
Custom Start Menu organization
Favorites
Firewall settings
Both of my wireless NICs work.

In short I had to click ok on one error message, reconfigure 3 settings and now i'm golden.  I've been up for 25 minutes since reboot, no error, hangs, crashes, other problems, and still can search.

I'll swing back by this topic if anything goes horribly wrong.

Monkey G.  =)
Just want to add that I had a similar problem with Windows Explorer encountered... and found sirbounty's advice fixed it with
"You should also try Start->Run->SFC /Scannow"

Thanks dude! saved me a rebuild..
I had exactly the same error, and although system restore was worthless, I was able to identify Musicmatch 10 as the culprit.  Using System State backup from a known viable system time, and then reinstalling up to Musicmatch 10...the problem has not reoccured in several days.
Admin rights

I had exactly the same error, but one profile was good and on most of the other profiles the explorer crashed.
The user of the good profile had admin rights, the others didnt.
So I gave admin rights to the users with the bad profiles and what happened:
All profiles worked well.
Well I have the same problem.. Kind of! I can not search my harddrives at all. In regular left click or the right click of Windows explorer ends up in same problem. I have tried all fixes suggested on this thread to no avail. I still get the "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." and this is the error signature:
AppName: explorer.exe       AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180       ModName: msvcrt.dll
ModVer: 7.0.2600.2180       Offset: 00037fd4
Please help! Here is the history of what has happened. I had installed WSP 2 for XP and did not pay attention to the fact if this problem was occuring beforehand or not. Either way, I tried to restore. Unfortunately when I updated to SP2 calendar on system restore was reset to the day of install and there was nothing furthe back... Well, I tried Start->Run->SFC /Scannow and it just ran thru and ended with no results or response(I am not sure if it did anything!?) Then I checked for spyware with Mcafee and adaware; all clean(at least that is what they say) Then I tried the key deletion stuf in the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers. Not a thing still. I have removed and reinstalled Windows SP 2. Nothing! Finally created new profile with administrative rights turned on and Notta!!!! Anymore ideas? I am getting ready to upgrade a CPU and double the memory and going to get a 7800 RPm hard drive for faster gaming. I wanted to save my files before doing so and maybe reloading the whole windows again. HELP! HELP!
i too getting the error, and tried out everything, but of no use. Have even loaded the image backup file, but the error doesnt go. Any solution???

AppName: explorer.exe       AppVer: 6.0.2900.3156       ModName: unknown

Frozenwind change the user account and take the files and settings through files and settings transfer wizard to the new account. I think that will be the best option. However if you want to troubleshoot the problem you will need to perform lot of steps.

1. Running a virus scan.
2. Checking the file integrity of windows files i.e Sfc /scannow.
3. Running a check disk from the recovery console i.e chkdsk /p and then /r.
4. You might also need to do a perfect clean boot. Thus by disabling all the services and startup items. I think that will help you diagnose this issue. Try then enabling it one by one so that you under stand the problem. Follow the following microsoft public article. i.e http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316434.
5. If this thing does not resolve the issue then try running a repair installation. and i think that should any how resolve the issue but before that make sure that you take a backup of all the data and user file.

Good Luck.....Post results.
I had this same problem. I saved teh file to my desktop and then ran it without incident.
