The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Can't view Web Pages, DNS Error with IE and Netscape both, but can Ping and DHCP Works

Dell Dimension Desktop
Windows XP Home SP1
Local Network with DSL through D-Link DI-604 (all other computers on the network are fine) and also Dialup connection to Isomedia ISP.

After removing much spyware and parasites, now web browsing and such does not work.  This is what I've tried (not in correct order)

Ran Spybot S&D, Ad-aware 6.181, CWShredder, HijackThis 1.97.7, Winsock Fix.
Re-installed XP Home
Did a Repair from the XP CD
Re-installed IE6 from the CD multiple times
Removed and Re-installed TCP/IP
Removed and Re-installed all Network items and NIC also from Windows
Installed Netscape 7.1, it give me an error about connection being refused
Installed a different Hard Drive and installed XP fresh - things work fine just like they should, so I know the hardware is ok.

From a Command Prompt, I can ping xxx.yyy.com or local PC's and it finds the correct IP address and pings fine.
I can reach other computers on the LAN just fine until I try ftp, telnet or an HTTP type connection.
Telnet does NOT work, error about  "Could not open connection to the host"
I can't ping this computer from others on the LAN, but it can ping them.
It get's the correct settings from the D-Link via DHCP and a "repair" works just fine.

I have used Ghost to copy the HD to another one and am doing experiments on the cloned copy.

What is very strange, is that upon the first bootup with the cloned HD, windows told me it has finished installing new hardware and needs to reboot.  Before I rebooted, I tried Internet Explorer and it worked great.  I even went to Windows Update and downloaded/installed 17 Critical Updates.  After rebooting, it's back to not working.

This is a customer's computer and I've had it for a few days too long now.  I know one solution is to just install XP into a new Folder, but I'd like to find a better solution because the whole family has accounts and quite a few programs installed.
