Browse All TopicsFrequently my machine will start bogging down, and when i check Task Manager - > Processes i see that Explorer.exe is using an unusually high amount of memory (at times over 100mb!!, when it should be using much less than 20. The only remedy is to kill the process and restart it. It has been doing this since a few days after i built it (3 weeks ago). I cant detemine if it happens at a specific time. I have all the latest windows patches. I dont have any service packs.
I have a 2.8 P4 with plenty of memory.
Thanks

Hey there :)
You might have spyware running on your computer that's making it bog down.
Kinda like what this person had:
http://forums.winforums.or
I suggest AdAware and S&D spy Bot.
adAware: http://download.com.com/30
Remember to update ^_^
S&D spyBot: http://download.com.com/30
Remember to update as well, plus imunize yourinternet explorer. I'll automaticaly block some spyware from trying to take over your computer. Personal favorite of mine. :D
Also run a virus scan. ;) Can't hurt.
You can run a free virus scan by TrendMicro from here:
http://housecall.trendmicr
Another personal favorite of mine. :D
Hopefully your problem is as simple as spyware and not something more serious. ^_^
Take care!

Here try this it shows what processes are attached to other processes and sometimes you can find out if there is another process that is the culprit.
also give this a go
Sart > Run msconfig
Click on the tab marked "Startup"
Click the Disable All button.
If the problem no longer persists then one of the items in the starup is the culprit you just need to track it down.
from vpstyle:
>Oops S&D and adaware are both spyware killers. :) You can do one or the other, or try them both out and see which you like best. :)
Forgot to mention what they were and state that you don't neccesarly need both. ;)
On the contrary, I recommend using both of them. I use BOTH of the above programs (Adaware and SpyBot Search & Destroy) on my 3 Windows systems; what one program misses, the other catches. Also make sure to choose the option to download the most up-to-date data before you run the programs.

Have you applied Service Pack 1 yet? If not that should correct the problem
