It may be because the option is turned off... if I understand your question.

You can turn it off an on from here:

Open Folder Options in Control Panel.
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Folder Options.
On the View tab, under Advanced settings, clear Use simple file sharing [Recommended].

Exactly ...but the option was NOT there on a few XPs..It is there on my XP but not on others.. I looked stupid when I went to show it to a guy.. It was not there ! ????

What SP is loaded on both?
Wouldn't think it mattered, but maybe that has something to do with it...

Sure it's XP Pro, right?  Cause XP Home doesn't have this option.  I think MCE does as well tho...

That MUST be it... could have been Home
However I would think the Home version would have   ..Simple File Sharing means everyone can share files right out of the box ..correct ?

XP Home always uses Simple File Sharing (you don't see the security tab).

Yes, but in XP Home, "Most of the time" (cause I've seen cases where this wasn't necessary) - you have to reboot into Safe Mode as the Administrator to share folders...Security tab is missing otherwise...

Does the computer have "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" installed in the Network Connection?

by: dorgunrPosted on 2004-06-11 at 07:16:11ID: 11288829

No both were XP PRO must be another reason

by: sirbountyPosted on 2004-06-11 at 07:17:56ID: 11288840

Then I'd say gemarti may be on to something - did you check his last post?

by: dorgunrPosted on 2004-06-11 at 07:19:47ID: 11288858

If Simple File Sharing is checked you will NOT have NTFS Security Tab available. If you uncheck Simple File Sharing in Folder OPtions then the NTFS Security Tab shows up. Just had to do this in a peer -to-peer where they wanted some restrictions in place. All XPs had the Simple File Shareing BOX to check or uncheck.
However on another XP PC at another site the Use Simple File Sharing BOX was not there.

I am not certain why that was.

If you're are very sure that the other system has XP Pro and the simple file sharing checkbox is unavailable, try this command:

regsvr32 /i shell32
(from the RUN box)

I gave it a shot and if my life depended on it I can not say I am certain if it was not a Windows XP home version.

However can anyone say why it is NOT there for the HOME version? (assuming for a moment that Pro has it and Home does NOT)

It doesn't seem logical.............  HOME can use NTFS  etc. correct ? Why the diffenence in HOME vs. PRO ?

by: sirbountyPosted on 2004-06-11 at 08:41:05ID: 11289704

Sure - cause Home was meant to run as a single/stand-alone operating system...it wasn't really meant to network it (or at least not primarily).
