Question

Cannot run EXE files in XP Home

Asked by: Joe_Cool

I loaded a project viewer then uninstalled it.  When I rebooted I get only the wallpaper.  I cannot run any exe files (only viewable via task manager), the task bar doesn;t show nor does the start button.  Safe mode doesn't help (same issue).

FYI Windows XP home
error is no program associsted with .exe file(s) use control panel to associate the file (I cannot get there)

Any help would be great.

/Joe

If the above file won't run, try this...  Copy and paste the following code into notepad, then save the file as update.inf NOT update.inf.txt.  Now close notepad and right-click the file you just saved and click install.  Now restart and see if your programs work.

I'm gaining...
I manually wrote in the .exe edits and .dll edits so a few limited functions now operate.  Apparently all file associations were wiped out.

Still cannot get explorer or ie to run.

Thats good advice from Crazy_one ....BUT BUT
But the regedit is an EXE file itself. So click start>Run>type cmd (or Command) and enter and rename the regedit.exe to regedit.com (rename regedit.exe regedit.com).

Now run regedit and do as Crazy_one said most importantly checking the "EXE file"

Change back the regedit to .EXE again. If it doesn't change--Never mind.

Can Blebla.wrm affect XP---I think only Home.

Good luck

How did you type in the .exe edits and .dll edits if nothing works? If all file associations were wiped out, you would not be able to do the .inf trick, nor would you be able to do the .reg trick (currently unmentioned) nor would you be able to run regedit.exe to manually type them in...

Let us know what does work, it will make it easier to fix the problem. Also, are you able to run any command promt (should in theory be just as impossible since XP has cmd.exe and command.com both not running without proper association.) and are you in any way capable of browsing your computer? (should in theory also be impossible)

I thought it affedted only EXE files. With that CMD and Command will still work.  CMD.EXE--I dont think so.

look in the %SystemRoot%\System32 directory .. Hokus Pokus cmd.exe

(just paste %SystemRoot%\System32 to your address bar)

Command is named Command.com so that would work if it is only the EXE files, but Joe Cool said "Apparently all file associations were wiped out." meaning also the file associations for .com

All,

While no 1 person provided the perfect solution my machine as back up thanks to some of the suggestions offered.

As for how...
Oddly .com files were not effected by this issues so I copied and renamed regedit.exe to regedit.com
then manually keyed the .exe associations from a working machine which enabled notepad among other apps.

I then copied the file associated from another pc registry and merged them in.  That got the machine running again.

I tried to do a restore at that point but it would work (unable to restore to select point) I tried a few to no avail.  At this point I reinstalled a few effected applications (office, etc) and all appears to be well.   - Yees, a new restore point has been set and a registry backup is next on teh list.

Thanks for all you r suggestions - and I hope no feelings are hurt by the point division.

/Joe
