Question

odbcint.dll is a different version...

Asked by: egbservices

Hi guys
Sorry to bother you but it looks like I have screwed up my computer. When I click on My Computer or want to shut down the message [C:\windows\system\odbcint.dll is a different version than C:\windows\odbc32.dll - need to reinstall odbc components to ensure proper operation]
Ever since that message turned up XP Home does no longer shut down. The shut down screen stays on the screen.
I have reinstalled XP Home over the existing installation.
(Don't know weather that was smart... comments to reinstall XPH invited please)
I have updated all the latest XP files.
I have also downloaded & installed MDAC2.8
No to the possible cause of the problem.
I have installed MS Office 97 but shortly after uninstalled it again. I have now installed Office 2000. Nothing helped... :-(
Please any hints and ideas of solving this and the shut down problem eagerly awaited.
Thanks, Edi

This is the page where I got MDAC2.8 from...
On the page it reads...
RESOLUTION
Download and install the latest version of the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC). This package updates all ODBC and the newer OLE DB drivers and resources on the system. The latest version of MDAC can be downloaded from the following Microsoft Web site:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/dataaccess.asp
Any idea which is tha latest version of MDAC?
Thanks, Edi

MDAC is a system component. Why don't you just run SFC /SCANNOW

by: gemartiPosted on 2004-06-28 at 04:10:26ID: 11414491

>>Any idea which is tha latest version of MDAC?
BTW It looks like MDAC 2.8 is the latest version.....

hi egbservices,
Here you can download the last version of MDAC:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=6c050fe3-c795-4b7d-b037-185d0506396c&DisplayLang=en
Until you fix this problem you can shutdown you system by using the "shutdown" command from the command prompt.

by: gemartiPosted on 2004-06-28 at 05:24:23ID: 11414919

I didn't see the comment about the shutdown problem...if diemola's suggestion for shutting down doesn't help the you can look at this web page for additional information:

WINDOWS XP SHUTDOWN & RESTART TROUBLESHOOTING

Thanks guys but so far nothing seems to work...
As mentioned I do have MDAC2.8 and have installed it.
I run SFC /SCANNOW but nothing much happened.
"shutdown" command from the command prompt does not work either
I have downloade component checker for MDAC versions. What am I checking for? What should be the correct versions in the registery for FullInstallVer and Version? See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=301202&product=mdac
This all get's a little to far and I am more confused than before...
:-( Edi

by: gemartiPosted on 2004-06-28 at 06:32:56ID: 11415442

The component checker is suppose to diagnose your system for problems, such as what you are suggesting here and then fix those problems, i.e. replace the incorrect dll file or instruct you on what to do.

by: gemartiPosted on 2004-06-28 at 06:38:08ID: 11415493

by: gemartiPosted on 2004-06-28 at 06:42:02ID: 11415522

But...to cut to the chase, it seems to me that you are most concerned with the shut down problem or is it both the shutdown problem and the MDAC problem....

Download this file, extract it from it's zipped file and double click the autoend.reg file. It will make a change to your registry which will allow your system to shutdown even if an application is hung...

>>comments to reinstall XPH invited please
Reinstall should have fixed your problems.....It is usually a last resort (for me anyway) but some experts here won't hesitate to suggest reinstallation. The only time I'll suggest it is when it is absolutely the only option; or when it looks like the easiest thing to do is to reinstall rather than try to work through a difficult problem with a novice user.

Hi Glenn
Thanks for your comments and help so far. I'm at work right now but will follow the MDAC repair instructions tonight and check that 'shutdown when application is hung' too. Somehow I hope that the odbc problem is connected to the shutdown, hence will fix it self when corrected.
I will keep you informed. Have a nice day / night... Edi

by: SheharyaarSaahilPosted on 2004-06-28 at 14:43:54ID: 11420598

just confirming something,,,, does this error also comes in safemode or with other users ??

by: egbservicesPosted on 2004-06-29 at 00:32:30ID: 11423549

Glenn - No luck... :-( I have re-installed MDAC2.8... ODBC error window popes up when I click on 'My Computer', 'Start', etc.
Have run the CC program as per your instruction on http://www.i2tlf.de/guidances/mdac-repair/mdac-repair-en.1.0.htm
Performed the analysis against a selected version, MDAC 2.8 RTM, but found no Mismatch!!
Sometimes when I click on 'My computer' the popping up window freezes and must be ended with [Ctrl - Alt - Del]
SheharyaarSaahil - The error pops up with other users too. I have not tried save mode as I do not know which key calls the start menu :-(
My next step would be to uninstall Office 2000... would this make sense?
Thanks for being patient... ;-)

by: egbservicesPosted on 2004-06-29 at 00:42:06ID: 11423589

Just found the save mode start up... F5 like WIN98... ;-)
The ODBC error still turnes up... :-(
The shut down works fine... :-)

by: SheharyaarSaahilPosted on 2004-06-29 at 03:57:12ID: 11424595

hmmmmmmm means it has infected the whole system, coz even safemode is giving the errors =\
so that cannot be the background service or application coz safemode runs without them !!!

it has damaged some system files\registries for sure :(
u can try uninstalling office first to check whether it can solve the issue or not,,,,, we will try troubleshooting further after u will post the results !!!!!

!! GOOD LUCK !!

by: gemartiPosted on 2004-06-29 at 04:20:09ID: 11424754

Okay so are you saying you have your shutdown problem resolved, but the ODBC error still exists?  Or is this just in safe mode that the shutdown problem goes away?

by: gemartiPosted on 2004-06-29 at 04:22:33ID: 11424767

Also did you uninstall the existing ODBC drivers from your system before trying to install the new?

by: egbservicesPosted on 2004-06-29 at 06:10:56ID: 11425556

Hi guys
I looks like the odbc error window has disappeared after I removed the odbc drivers from the odbc data source administrator and deleted the 2 files in question. I have then run SFC /SCANNOW again and once more installed MDAC2.8. This seems to have done the trick... :-)
The shut down problem in normal mode is still here. In save mode, as mentioned above, it shuts down fine.
I have not yet dared and tried the http://aumha.org/downloads/autoend.zip
If a program is hung I think it should be possible to find out which one it is.
May be there are some other ways to solve this problem.
Cheers for now, Edi

by: SheharyaarSaahilPosted on 2004-06-29 at 07:02:53ID: 11426105

in normal mode background services and startup applications run !!!!!
so first thought can be towards it !!!!!

try going to Start>Run>msconfig>Services and click on Disable All
then goto Startup and Disable All

reboot and now try to shutdown,,,, does the problem happen again ??

by: gemartiPosted on 2004-06-29 at 07:57:54ID: 11426680

>>May be there are some other ways to solve this problem

Hung applications are usually logged in your eventvwr or in a DRWATSON32.log file

START | RUN | EVENTVWR.MSC
Review both APPLICATIONS and SYSTEM for errors related to the shutdown problem.

>>I have not yet dared and tried the http://aumha.org/downloads/autoend.zip
FYI:

AutoEnd.ZIP reg content:
++++++++++++++++++++++
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\desktop]
"AutoEndTasks"="0"

+++++++++++

AutoEndTasks can be either 1 or 0...

by: egbservicesPosted on 2004-06-30 at 01:22:30ID: 11433423

SheharyaarSaahil - I have disabled all the Service settings in msconfig. Shut down the machine 2 times and it did not want to know... :-(
Glenn - I run EVENTVWR.MSC. There are a few Warnings and Errors and many Informations but no Warning or Errors for todays date... :-(
I have modified the [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\desktop]
"AutoEndTasks"="0" to "1"
Shut down the machine 2 times and it still froze on shutdown... :-(
I will now change the BIOS, if a new one is available, who knows!
Cheers for now, Edi

by: gemartiPosted on 2004-06-30 at 05:10:18ID: 11434677

First of all go ahead and change the AutoEndTasks back to 0 sincethe change wasn't necessary. 0=enabled 1=disabled.

by: SheharyaarSaahilPosted on 2004-06-30 at 07:52:23ID: 11436450

>> I will now change the BIOS

what abt changing the vidoe cards !!!!

by: egbservicesPosted on 2004-06-30 at 14:40:16ID: 11441242

Glenn - I set the AutoEndTasks back to 0 after I noticed that it does not help!
SheharyaarSaahil - When I 1st bought the machine and had XPH installed only it worked fine. I doubt very much that the hardware causes this shutdown problem.

by: SheharyaarSaahilPosted on 2004-06-30 at 14:46:24ID: 11441301

hmmmmmmm,,,, coz u know in safemode video cards are not loaded, it runs with VGA(motherboard) support !!!!
and in safemode no shutdown problem, so i thought in normal mode when system is running with video cards, can be causing this problem :-?

by: egbservicesPosted on 2004-07-01 at 00:13:21ID: 11444162

One hardware option might cause the problem too...
I have set the BIOS to Raid 1 which mirrors the C: drive to the 2nd HDD.
May be I should disable it and see what happens! What do you think?

by: egbservicesPosted on 2004-07-02 at 16:00:38ID: 11460849

Hi guys
After going through all your comments and doing that painful bug search I have now fixed both the problems on my machine.

gemarti - I greatly appreciate your valuable inputs which lead me to the source of the evil of my main XP problem, the odbcint.dll & odbc32.dll version mismatch.

SheharyaarSaahil - your hints regards the shutdown problems opened many unknown avenues for me which helped me to pin point possible causes of this problem. In this case the culprit was the program ZipMagic which did not close correctly on shutdown.

Both of your inputs were definitely of great value to me, hence I'd like to share the point among you guys.
Please give me your feedback on how you see this and how best to share the points.
Many thanks again and see you later, Edi

Hi guys
I have now split the points the way I see it...
300 for gemarti and 200 for SheharyaarSaahil
Thanks guys for that big and excellent effort of helping me.
Cheers, Edi
