Is there any residential software which will keep the spay-ware out of your computer, like a anti-virus? Freeware will be a must.

My recommendation would be to start with spybot ,ad-ware ,CWshredder and post the log from Hijackthis



After installing them, First Update them and then run

Residential as a anti-virus, always protecting the computer, instead having to run the software manually.

Spybot has this feature built into it.  You can use it's immunize mode to block bad sites premptively as well as starting "Tea Timer" which can pop up a box to ask you if you want to make the registry change that spyware is trying to do and you can stop it.

Honestly I use spybot and I think it is a great software but 2 of the computers that I tried to use that feature it did not help after the clean-up I had spyware back to the computer.

Were you using Immunize or Tea Timer?  The paid version of Ad-Aware has a resident mode as well, but as far as free software, Spybot is the only one that comes to mind.  We use a script to install Spybot on our client computers that also creates a scheduled scan of the machine.  It isn't exactly resident, but it does daily scans of the machines so they stay pretty clean.

My friend also uses some other lesser known program that is supposed to be a resident program as well.  I'll have to get the name from him sometime.
