The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Random restarts, random error codes

Asked by pbbiii in Windows XP Operating System

For at least the last 4 months (my memory fails after that point), blue screens with varying errors occur - sometimes with great frequency (e.g., 3 times so far today) other times, once or twice a week.  The most common stop error is the 0x8E, but an occasional 0xD1 (DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL) error occurs.

I can't seem to locate a pattern of events leading to the errors.

Today, I received three 0x8E errors:  (0x00000005, F7408D6B, B677194C, 0) with the driver SR.SYS indicated and upon subsequent reboot, the windows troubleshooter indicated that I had a CPU failure.
Another was 0x8E (0xC0000010, 0xBA2F1228, F78A2E30,0) NV4_MINI.SYS and the last was 0x8E (didn't write down the parameters) with the driver name being win32k.sys.

I've done a fair amount of troubleshooting over the past several months including format and reinstall of all software.

I've run the microsoft memtest overnight with no errors found.
I've used the debug and symbol libraries with no luck in identifying anything other than I either have a memory problem, a device driver problem, etc.

I have created an everest home edition report (all 133 pages) on my system and if that is of any value, I can send it.  But at the bottom are a few pages that provide the high level view of the computer (motherboard, drives, peripherals, bios, etc).

I've created two other windows installations on this computer - one on a FAT32 drive in case I have to deal with a stop 0x24 issue again, and another on a NTFS drive that has almost nothing installed but gives me access to the internet, etc to recover from worst case scenarios (hopefully).  I have not had either of these two fail, but I've also never used either of them extensively.

What do I do now?
