Question

Try to open jpg by double-click in Windows Explorer gives "Windows cannot find <filename>. Make sure you typed the name correctly".

Asked by: jff

I have an image viewer, Polyview, associated with jpgs.  When I double-click in Windows Explorer on a jpg, Polyview runs but instead of opening the jpg I get the message "Windows cannot find <file>.  Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.  To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.".  I've noticed that if Polyview is open (for example, if I click OK to the above message then double-click on the jpg again) the jpg opens right away in Polyview, it's only when Windows tries to run Polyview and Open the jpg.  Word docs and other file associations work okay.  I tried restoring and then having Polyview reset the file associations, no luck.

My OS is XP Pro.  I have scanned with both Spybot & Adaware, no spyware installed.  I have scanned with the latest McAfee definitions, no viruses.  This must be something screwed up with the File Associations, but I can't figure out what.

Hello jff =)

try this,,,, uninstall polyview, adn then run this registry,,,

JPE/JPG/JPEG Association Fix (Restore the default associations for jpe/jpg/jpeg files)
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

after that restart the system, and check if now jpegs are working fine with double click !!!
if YES then reinstall polyview, try opening jpegs and check if same problem has started, if YES then this software is not comaptible with ur system, dont install it !!!!!

!! GOOD LUCK !!

Try associating the JPG with paint and ry that.. If it works then its the program and the assotiation with JPG..

Let me know.

fraubungle: I associated jpgs with paint, that works perfectly.  I then re-associated them to Polyview, problem re-appears.

SheharyaarSaahil: I will uninstall and reinstall this afternoon ... that may fix it but I guess I should have mentioned that I have used Polyview on this system for several years, ie. Polyview is certainly compatible (but something somewhere is corrupted).  Barring further ideas I will do the uninstall and reinstall this afternoon and report back.

Thanks!

ok then we will work on this more to find out the root cause, if after a uninstall\reinstall, it will behave in the same manner,,, i have never used this kind of software so was not sure of its compatibility, but if it was working fine before, then surely there is a reason of its odd behaving,,, and we will surely get it :)

!! GOOD LUCK !!

If thats the case with the program running for years then what have you installed latley??  This could well cause a conflict with a assotiation..

I hope it works this afternoon good luck.

Let us know..

Mark.

I uninstalled Polyview, used the registry reset link above for jpgs, verified that Paint worked with jpgs, then reinstalled the latest Polyview - same problem.  If Polyview isn't open when I double-click in Windows Explorer on a jpg image, it opens and then Windows gives me the error.  If Polyview is already open it works fine, ie. the file appears in Polyview.  This file association, ie. double-clicking on a jpg and having it open into a new Polyview has worked fine for me for years on this system - I (and the Polyview support people) am baffled.  Ideas?

Got it.  A Spyware sweeping program is somehow, some way, blocking this from happening.  If I close it down, this works.  If I have it running, this activity doesn't work.  Very strange.  If everyone is okay I will give frabungle the credit as he was the first/only one to ask what other programs I have installed lately (and that got me thinking).  Fair?

Thanks All!
Jason

PS - Another guy I was dealing with individually suggested it may be a timing problem, that Explorer watches the process table for a while after asking Win32 to launch a program and maybe my Spy software is delaying the activity just enough to trigger the message.
