Question

'Access Denied' to old profiles

Asked by: kohashi

Background:  hard drives crashed, a new hard drive was installed as the primary with a fresh copy of windows xp home.

Problem:  when accessing the c:\Documents and Settings\*username* the error 'Access is Denied' pops up for all the profiles.

Is there any way to get into these folders either by taking control of them as an admin, or some other way to see if any of the data can be restored?

Thanks,
-kohashi

U have to take ownership of these profile folders as described in the above article, and then u shud get the Permissions to access these folders to copy them :)

These guys are correct. You need to take ownership of these files to view their contents. When you reinstalled windows xp the GUID changed on the user account. Even if you amed the user account the same name the GUID is still different. The GUID is what the permissions are sctually assigned to not the actual user name. You can also re-assign ownership of the profile directory to the %username%. This will allow the %username% to use the profile as they did on the previous hard drive.

You need to turn off simple file sharing in Windows XP to see the security tab.

To do this, choose Folder Options from the Tools menu in Windows Explorer. Click the View tab. Scroll down to the box titled Use simple file sharing (Recommended) and uncheck it. Click OK. Now when you right-click a folder and choose Sharing and Security, the Sharing tab will be just like the one in Windows 2000. You should now have the security tab available to you.

Is there a way to apply the security pattern to a whole folder or even a whole drive and its subfolders without modifying one file after the other ? I tried with select all or by applying the security to a folder and it does'nt change the security for the sub-folders. Thanks for your help!

I have the same problem, but I'm running Windows XP Home Edition, and the checkbox "Use simple file sharing (Recommended" does not show up under the Folder Options in the Tools menu in Windows Explorer. I've quite an amount of data taking up space on the harddisk under some profiles. Does anyone have a clou how to come around this. Thanks. Geir Sunde
