Browse All TopicsIn the middle of watching a rented DVD movie on my pc the screen suddenly went black and the computer shut down. It went into a restart but was unable to display the welcome page.
I did a cold reboot and was able to reach the log in (welcome) page showing my account name (Administrator) and 'Guest' log in. I entered my password and received the following error message under the heading of 'Windows Product Activation' - "A problem is preventing Windows from accurately checking the license for this computer. error code: 0x80090019" At first clicking OK to this would bring me to my desktop showing only the wallpaper and mouse pointer but no icons. After several minutes of this display, with no apparent way out I switched off the power. Subsequent reboots would go exactly the same way whether I used my password entry or the 'Guest' account. In the case of the Guest account I would reach a blank desktop with the correct wallpaper for that account displaying.
On other reboots a new message appeared ..... under the title 'User Environment' - "Windows cannot load your profile because it may be corrupted. Contact your administrator" .... (that's a good one!) ....... and then - "Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you in with a temporary profile. Any changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off". Then there is a pause while 'loading your settings' appears and there is obvious HD activity but then the original error message about checking the license will re-appear .............
Win XP was activated and has been running more or less smoothly for over nine months. What's going on?
