I'm trying to set up port forwarding on my Netgear WGT624 router. The first step is to get my PC set to a manual private IP address, so that it will retain the same IP if rebooted (DHCP might assign a different one, they say). I was told that I could set a manual IP on the one computer, but leave the router alone (it's a DHCP server) and the other two computers alone (set to obtain IP automatically (DHCP)). Using XP-Pro SP1.
My satelite modem private internal network IP is 192.168.0.1, my router's is 192.168.2.1, the PCs are getting assigned 192.168.2.2, .3, etc. As long as the PCs "obtain IP automatically", everything's good. I tried assigning a manual IP of ...2.100 to the computer where I want to forward ports.
Whenever I do this, I lose all connectivity to the Internet from the manually set PC. I rebooted twice. It appears from this experience that manual IP and DHCP by the router don't mix well, at least in my network here. So you can see if I goofed up a setting I text-captured all the stuff right from my net adapter TCPIP setup screens:
