Question

user names have disappeared from the "processes" tab of the Task Manager. (XP)

Asked by: astragalix

How can I fix this problem: the "user name" column of the "Processes" tab of the
Windows Task Manager is empty.  It doesn't show my name in user processes, and
it doesn't show "system" anymore for the system processes.  In the "Users" tab
of the Task Manager, no users at all are listed.

Actually on the processes tab, it shows "system" as the user name of the "system Idle"
process, but all the others are blank.

The names were there a few days ago, when i last looked.  The computer seems to be
running properly.  I can log out, and log in; the password protection on the log-in is
working.  I don't know if this is a symptom of terrible things.

SFC /scannow returned no errors.  Norton full system scan found no virus. Nothing strange
in the startup sequence.  No alien processes running, so far as i can tell.

I hope someone can tell me how to fix this! Thanks, astra.

Try resetting the TaskManager settings using this fix:

Hi sramesh2K.  Thanks for your quick response.

I backed up that registry key, and ran your TaskManager_Reset.

This did not solve the problem.  I rebooted, and still nothing.  The problem is still the
same, when i open Task Manager, it does not display any "user names" in the
"processes" tab of the Task Manager.

Any other thoughts?  Best to you, astra.

Apart from View > Select Columns, I have no clues as of now. A spyware check might help! but I will look into it, astra.

Solved it myself!

The names in Task Manager will appear only if you have "Terminal Services" running.  If you disable "Terminal Services" the names disappear.

Excellent, astragalix!!

How did you find out?

Thanks sramesh.

I found out by google-ing to find someone else with the same problem, he got as far as discovering that it was "something in services" by turning them all on... so i went the next step and enabled and disabled services selectively until i found the 'culprit'.

thanks again for your help, astra
