Running XP Home Edition w/SP 1a. Problem with search screen/windows explorer. Search screen turns on unbidden.

I have a ABS computer (custom made). 3.0 MHz Pentium, 1024 MB memory, ATI 9800 XT graphics, Audigy 2 ZX sound, RAID 2-0 (Western Digital 120 MB HD's), ASUS motherboard. It's running Windows XP Home with SPD 1a (plus updates). Ever since I've had it, a maddening problem has occurred (motherboard and HD's have been replaced). After boot up, the Search Screen (on Start Menu) comes up unbidden and begins iteration after interation. I sometimes see 50-60 Windows Explorer groups in the task bar. I try to cancel these out using Task Manager, but it's usually a losing proposition. I know this sounds weird, but this problem seem to occur most often in the afternoon -- after the machine sits all day. It usually runs fine in the morning. Also, it sometimes won't boot properly. The HD light stays on until I press FI, and the Windows splash screen stays on until I press Control several times. I've reinstalled Windows from the image on my HD twice, but it doesn't help. This is obviously a game oriented machine, and it runs beautifully -- when it runs properly. Benchmarks are right up there. I can't seem to find any references to this problem in the databases I've checked.
