Question

Printer Stops Working

Asked by: loneill2

I just bought a new Compaq Presario and hooked up my printer to it.  After awhile, the printer light goes off and stops printing print jobs.

I have Windows XP home edition with all the necessary patches.

What could be wrong?

Hi SheharyaarSaahil,
> woooohhhh.... are u sure it can work WELL still ;-)

Hey.. We've only just got rid of our last LaserJet III. ;-)
The worst problem I found with old printers is with the fuser units. They typically die about every year once the printer gets over a certain age in my experience.

Do your print jobs disappear from the print queue, or does the print queue list a printer error?

Good Luck!
:-)

HP has listed these four kinds of Laserjet 4L printers >> http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/ProductList.jsp?locale=en_US&taskId=135&prodSeriesId=25486&prodTypeId=18972

Does the printer go into sleep mode? have you ever used the printer in XP;

Sometimes my laser goes into sleep; then I need to unselect the use printer offline

Does a reboot get it working again?  Check the administrative tools>Service and verify that the "Print Spooler" service is still running when the printer stops.

by: loneill2Posted on 2004-08-16 at 19:56:04ID: 11817200

Yes, a reboot gets it working again.

by: Eagle6990Posted on 2004-08-16 at 20:16:57ID: 11817264

Check the print spooler next time it does it and see if it is still running or not

by: loneill2Posted on 2004-08-16 at 20:32:35ID: 11817323

Yes, it appears to be running.  It's started.  Perhaps, there some configuration property ..

Oh, and BTW, the cable I'm using is a parellel to USB.  The port the printer is on is a virtual port.

I checked to see if Use Offline was on and it isn't.

Have you always used a parallel to USB converter or only since getting this computer? I smell something fishy there.

by: loneill2Posted on 2004-08-16 at 20:36:55ID: 11817334

Also, downloaded the HP 4L driver and still doesn't work.

by: loneill2Posted on 2004-08-16 at 20:37:54ID: 11817338

I used it on my old computer and it worked fine.

Doesn't work on this one.

I think you're right..must be something up with USB virtual port.

Service Pack 2 on your computer?

Looked in Add/Remove programs...bunch of Windows Hotfix (SP2) are in there.

by: loneill2Posted on 2004-08-16 at 21:13:36ID: 11817484

I'm using a Belin USB hub...maybe Windows XP doesn't have a driver that?

by: Eagle6990Posted on 2004-08-17 at 07:07:17ID: 11820630

Does the USB hub have external power or is it all plugged into just the hub?  Try moving it to directly on your motherboard and see if it loses it's connection then.  Printers and USB hubs can act very strange when the hub isn't powered.

by: loneill2Posted on 2004-08-18 at 20:36:51ID: 11837855

Looks like it was the hub.  Moved it to the computer and it works!

Gave points to two other solutions since they helped arrive to the final conclusion.
