Asked by: waltermb

have had a compaq 2700t laptop for about 3 years without a problem. only change lately was install of one of the usb keys. shortly after that--i cannot boot up--system keeps going to message

system root/system 32/confi/software
or its log is corrupt, absent or not working

i tried putting the xp pro disk in and running repair--no change

the laptop is on a network with symantec corporate protection on it--so i assume it is checked by the server? at this point i cant get past the screen that states what i wrote in this question. is the only way around this to make the 8 floppies and go through the microsoft registry clean suggested by jkr?

It is not the only way, but the easiest apart from doing a repair install (which will probably fail because of a corrupted registry)

have gone to the microsoft link you suggested--and see the two programs i must put on floppies--it say  i must first download the floppy disk install disks---when i do this--expecting to need 6 disks--it starts to copy the first--then tells me i dont have enough room on the disk. somehow it is not splitting the program for me. so i am stuck again. also strange is i went ahead to download the registry repair--it says multiple disk--put the first one in--and it seemed to copy the entire file without added disks-strange------any suggestions appreciated
