Question

XP System Rebooting by itself

Asked by: bigdg

I have been currently running MIRC and about every 5 to 6 hours the system just shuts down and reboots.  It states that a serious error has occurred.  This is the error message.

  C:\DOCUME~1\BIGD~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER38af.dir00\Mini092504-02.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\BIGD~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER38af.dir00\sysdata.xml

Can someone tell me what is causing this?  I ran my viru scan and Ad-ware to make sure I don't have any bad bugs......so far, it's clear.  I am clearly stumped ...Help would be greatly appreciated.  I just had a clean installation about 2 months ago.

When it reboots does it give you any error message ?

If not , do this
Try doing this
Right-click "my computer"go to properties
go to advanced
go to settings under "startup and recovery"and uncheck "automatically restart"

and check next time when it gives you an error

have you tried to work on safe mode to see if the same happens ?

Have you tried to reinstall MIRC to see if that would help . Make sure to install specifically for windows xp

Also try checking in a different user on the same machine and see if the problem occurs. If there is no other user, create one . If there is no problem in other user you can copy your profile

How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=811151

and see if that solves the issue

Use these to check for spywares

Some of the experts here have helped in compiling all the important spyware tools and they are listed in this thread
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Web/Browser_Issues/Q_20975384.html

My recommendation would be to start with spybot ,ad-ware ,CWshredder and get the log from Hijackthis and save the log and paste it here http://hijackthis.de/index.php?langselect=english to analyze it

After installing them, First Update them and then run

Possibly this even though not listed for xp

MIRC Trojan-Related Attack Detection and Repair
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q328691

Go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install all the latest updates .. at this moment ,you may not install Sp2 until the problem is solved. If you already got all the updates , then fine.

Then scan thoroughly for virus in your machine
Use Stinger : http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
and this online virus scanner : http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Remove temporary internet files, folders and cookies
Also remove windows Temp files going to

1) Start --> run --> typein:  %systemroot%/temp
2) Start  --> run --> typein: %temp%

Post back how it goes
