ASKER

i just did a search and found autochk.exe is located in two locations.

c:\windows\i386  and c:\windows\system32

i already did a scannow and no changes.
thanks dave-

1)  i went to the site; here's what they wrote:

But within my system like all others the entry in the registry looked fine.
(localmachine/system/currentcontrolset/control/sessionmanager).

Looking more exactly showed me the solution of the problem - instead
of "autocheck autochk *" the entry was "autocheck autochk*" - a space
missing between autochk and the * - since the change everything works
fine again - after "unpredictable reboots" the chkdsk command is
running via autochk for dirty-flaged partitions - like it should be.

=============
so i went to regedit and went all the way to sessionmanager but i saw no entry of "autocheck autocheck autochk* or autocheck autochk *

what should i do?

========

2)  also did some searching around and found another opinion- they wrote:

what I did for Home XP:  Went into registry

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro
l\Session Manager\

In session manager (to the right) I created a Multistring Value and named it BootExecute.

In value data I put:
BootExecute : REG_MULTI_SZ : autocheck autochk *

Dave- i did all that but at the last minute i chickened out and never did it.

yes the bootexecute was missing entirely.  now to try it out- entering the reg data.
Bingo! Thanks Dave.

I am not sure what happened to lose it. I think I was using Registry First Aid and that might have caused it.

It so difficult to find a really good registry cleaner. any really fantastic ones?

Again thanks
That seems an unusual entry for a cleaner to "clean", but anything's possible.
I've used a few in the past, but I've given up with them for now.
I found I *always* had to look over the candidates for deletion that it just wasn't
worth it.   I won't recommend one, but there are plenty of good and balanced
articles on the web.  Here's one:
