it could be the popup blocker in IE (SP2)
try disabling it
tools-->popup blocker
PS, my wife has had problems with pogo and IE (SP2)
even disabling the popup blocker hasn't helped, so she uses netscape to access pogo

Hi,

One of the most important changes SP2 makes to Windows XP is the elimination of Java support. This may be why you cannot access certain pages anymore (online banking sites often use java to secure their interfaces). If this is the care, you will need to install java runtime environment separately in order to view those pages.

One can be obtained from the following site:
http://javashoplm.sun.com/ECom/docs/Welcome.jsp?StoreId=22&PartDetailId=jre-1.5.0-oth-JPR&SiteId=JSC&TransactionId=noreg

Not sure this is the problem you are facing but have found this to be the cause of several sites not working properly anymore after installing SP2.

Hope this helps

>>One of the most important changes SP2 makes to Windows XP is the elimination of Java support
I disagree
could you site your reference, so I can read the documentation on this
I installed SP2, and still have java support on my box (had thought this might be the problem), so I went to some java sites to check, and java works fine

PS, IMHO sun's java is crap especially on M$ systems
slow and a pig for resources

stevenlewis

I am referring to the elimination of the Java virtual machine from windows
http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum21/8263.htm
http://msdn.microsoft.com/security/default.aspx?pull=/library/en-us/dnwxp/html/xpsp2web.asp
http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/java/

I am talking from personal experience after upgrading to SP2 and doing a clean install with SP2 integrated. Both times my online banking and even some yahoo functions did not work. Installing the java software recommended on the microsoft site (sun java) solved my problems. That is why i posted this here.

But installing the JRE did not solve my problem. i could have used Netscape to open other sites but it would sound funny as i say it but it is true. the main site i am facing a problem with is the microsoft home page itself. when i goto the www.microsoft.com it loads the home page and stops fine and then i cannot access any links on that page and then i have to force exit from that page.  what could be the problem.

I just tested my java
http://www.fitwise.com/testjava.asp
my results
This browser is now running a JDK 1.0 applet.
This browser can run Java version 1.1.4 applets.
Java support in this browser is provided by Microsoft Corp..
The operating system is Windows NT version 5.1.
from both applet boxes
and I am running IE with SP2

from http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum21/8263.htm
"MS Java Virtual Machine: This is no longer distributed. You should direct your users to java.sun.com"
it is no longer distributed (wasn't included in clean install so XP at all)
but the installation of SP2 does NOT remove java support if it is already there

...you COULD do all of the above, or you could just uninstall that annoying, buggy 'upgrade', by the name of "SP2"! :P

I had the exact same problemsas you , as well as some others, I decided to uninstall SP2. Seeing as I already have a Firewall (www.zonealarm.com) and a Popup blocker (toolbar.google.com), and some AV (www.symantec.com) and some anti-spyware (www.webroot.com > SpySweeper)  :)

Best of luck,

microsoft team might have put lots of efforts to make this sp2 uninstalling it should not be the only option for this problem. there should be some way out of it right..........

"microsoft" ... "effort" ... ? I don't understand  :P hehe

I had a look at support.microsoft.com for you, and these could probably help you solve it:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;ie
&:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;838199

Hope that helps

krishna0414,

Sorry to hear your problems remain. (They are not java related since the microsoft site does not have need fot JRE). I have seen this problem reported a few more times on the internet but no solution apart from re-installing the OS has been helpful.

The microsoft website uses ActiveX scripting for its menus, so if your security settings for activex have somehow been changed to block those (would be weird since it is a proprietary microsoft scripting language) you may have trouble with that, however the direct links should still work. Checking your security settings for ActiveX is the last thing i can think of. It will probably not work since these settings would not freeze your browser but simply block the scripts from running.

SP2 is definitely a more secure environment then SP1 and worth installing if you are using Windows XP. I would try a clean install of Windows XP followed by the SP2 Upgrade, if you have the time and it is possible to backup all your critical data and documents (ie. email, docs etc.)

Good Luck!

stevenlewis,

I fail to see the relevance of your Java test results (on a Windows NT machine) in helping to find a solution to the problem. What i wrote is based on my experience and the solutions worked in those cases.

i have even tried a clean install of the  OS yesterday. all the websites worked fine till i had installed the SP2. once the sp2 was installed the problem was back again.............

Do you have any driver incompatibilities? Make sure you are using the latest drivers for your main hardware components. ie. motherboard, graphics card, sound card and any external hardware.

This is just a stab in the dark...

by: krishna0414Posted on 2004-10-10 at 08:34:11ID: 12271529

nothing of that sort.......

my device manager is clean..

by: crxmailPosted on 2004-10-10 at 08:38:01ID: 12271543

Check the manufacturers websites for the latest drivers (namely graphics card, which is one of the first one to cause instabilities in pc's).

Are you using Home or Professional edition?

If Professional, does your event viewer give you any error messages? (control panel > administrative tools > event viewer)

by: krishna0414Posted on 2004-10-10 at 08:44:45ID: 12271559

i am using the XP home edition on a DELL laptop. all the drivers i installed are provided by the maunfacturers along with the product.

by: crxmailPosted on 2004-10-10 at 08:51:43ID: 12271576

Dell has some driver updates that should be installed before applying SP2:

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kb/en/document?dn=1090437&c=us&l=en&s=gen&cs=

Hope you find a solution with these drivers. (ie. bluetooth and ATI mobility radeon)

Try going to internet options, security tab.

Change the login to anonymous.  On my wife's, it was set to only login to intranet domain.
