The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Merging files from backup after clean install XP

Asked by cpemt in Windows XP Operating System

Tags: xp, clean, backup, files, install

I will be doing a clean install of XP Home after disastrous Norton Internet Security install and have several questions to help ease the pain:

1. Is there an advantage to a boot partition on the hd apart from where I keep my program files like Photoshop, etc.?

2. If "yes", then is it a simple matter of moving Photoshop after installation from the default location (assuming I don't have a choice of install location) from C:Program Files to the "programs" partition?

3. What size would you recommend for a boot partition? I have 80G total.

4. What is a good ee link for steps to set up the partition?

5. After os is installed, is it safe to restore from backup my "Documents and Settings" folder or should I hand pick the files to restore?

6. If I must hand pick, where do my Outlook Express e-mails and addresses reside?

7. Lastly, I have lots of programs to re-install, some with many preferences and actions accumilated from years of use. I will use Photoshop as an example here. I will do a new install from my Photoshop cd to either C: or D:, depending on if I am partitioned. To restore my actions and preferences, I will restore Photoshop from my backup files over the new installation. Is this a safe and workable way to restore my program files?

Thanks.
