Question

Email Virus - Outlook Express

Asked by: qunck

I've got a virus that arrived via email, and neither Norton Anti-Virus free trial nor Computer Associates Anti-Virus free trial, both recommended by Microsoft and downloaded from Microsoft's site, can spot it.

The virus causes the email in which it arrived ( I assume...though maybe it arrived from elsewhere and attached itself to one specific other email) to keep replicating itself every time I open Outlook Express and each time Outlook Express does an automatic check for new email. Sometimes the email will be replicated as many as 50 times in immediated succession.

I have tried deleting the email from everywhere I can find it in Outlook Express, but that doesn't do the trick.

My ISP (i-2000.com, i think a good company) says they see no sign of any repeated emails, and because of this they think the virus is on my standalone (not networked) computer.

Please notify me if this should have been posted to another forum.

Is your problem , you are getting 50 times everytime doing send and receive or
sending out 50 emails ?

Do this

virus scanner:
---------------
When you scan for virus,do all the below in both Normal mode and Safe mode.

a) Update your virus definitions in your Anti-virus and run it.

b) Download Stinger from here : http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/  and run it.

c) Use this Online virus scanner also : http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

What email did you delete..

What kind of email account you have POP3 or IMAP ?

I get many copies of the bad email almost every time I manually or automatically check for new emails. It has nothing to do with emails I send.

I keep deleting the original email, which I assume is the one being replicated, and I've deleted everything I've ever received from that sender, and blocked all incoming emails from that sender.

>> I  get many copies of the bad email almost every time I manually or automatically check for new emails.

Depending on the email account that you have set, you should be able to go to webmail of that account and delete emails.
have you done that ?

Do you get replicated emails from the same sender everytime ?

You may want to create a new identity , create your account and see if the same thing happens

Hmmm, no I don't know how to do that.

>> Do you get replicated emails from the same sender everytime ?
Yes

I've just deleted my abandoned account with Netscape, which it occurs to me I set up at about the time this prob started happening.  I'll wait a few minutes to see if that has any effect, then try creating a new account name under Tools > Accounts > Properties > and put in a new Name ... is that what you mean?

Thx

what type of email account you have like POP3 or imap ..

what I meant about deleting the email going to web is , can you go online and check the same emails that you check in your OE. If yes , you can remove the emails from that sender from your server and see if that helps..

Have you confirmed from that sender that he or she doesnot have any virus in the system. if there is virus in his or her system , it is going to send emails to all in the address book. That control needs to be done on the other end..

When i say identity , I mean this
OLEXP: How to Create and Use Identities in Outlook Express 5.x and 6.0
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/209169/EN-US/

create a new identity. go inside that identity. go to tools --> accounts and create an account.
BEFORE SENDING AND RECEIVING EMAILS DO THIS,
go to tools --> accounts ---> go to properties of the accounts
go to advanced and check "leave a copy of the messages on server"

now send and receive and see if that helps

Hi sunray2003 ~
I have a POP3 email account

I went online to check my emails and found one instance of the replicated email,
but there's no way there to reject in advance, i.e., block, emails from some particular source..

I talked to my ISP/Email account's tech support & they said they have no way of knowing after all whether these replicated emails are coming through their system.

They suggested installing and running AdAware, which I've done & will run again to make sure i'm doing it right. It's a little hard to tell, but it looks like I was able to wipe out a lot of bad files with AdAware.

I'll get back to you tomorrow about it all.

Thanks.

Personally , I donot see adware or any spyware causing this issue.. Mostly it is the ISP or email provider or corruption in the identity/mail account setup in OE.
You may want to try ad-aware as your ISP might have solved this doing that..

Post back how it goes

Hi SR
Okey, downloaded & run Stinger...it removed a bunch of stuff but didn't fix the problem...
...then I did the Housecall.trendmicro thing & it said "No viruses"

>> Depending on the email account that you have set, you should be able to go to webmail of that account and delete emails.
I've just realized what you meant by this, sorry to be so dense, within the next half hour I'll log on to my ISP's web site and check email from there...
...Do I understand correctly that if these same replicated emails appear on the ISP's email site (when I'm not running Outlook Experss) that means the source problem is *not* on here on my computer?

by: sunray_2003Posted on 2004-10-22 at 13:20:22ID: 12384755

possibly..  could be an issue on the webmail ie ISP side.. You have to check with them then

by: qunckPosted on 2004-10-22 at 13:47:44ID: 12384989

SR ~
OK, the ever-replicating emails *are* arriving at my ISP's website where I check for my emails.

I notice that when I remove them from the Deleted Items folder of my Outlook Express (they go there automatically because I've used OE's Message > Block Sender to block them), they disappear from my ISP's website email page...I guess that just means that all emails are removed from the ISP's site when they are sent to my computer.

I'll call my ISP now and ask them to block the sender from incoming to them, & we'll see if this does the trick.

I'll let you know...

Hey SR ~

My ISP blocked the sender from there and it solved the problem. Weird. Why would a virus keep generating an email without the virus getting itself onto the recipient's computer? Maybe the virus is on somebody else's computer out there...but it also sounds kinda like a glitch somewhere along the line that only...oh, well, I give up!

Thanks for your help.
