Question

Scan Disk "not found"

Asked by: Lrainer

Also Disk Defragmenter can be opened by short cut only, and will not proceed beyond an "Analysis", and System Restore does not give me a restore point.

Otherwise programs behave pretty normally. Somr minor problems, but those listed seem very major.

Hello Lrainer =)

have you tried a SFC scan ??
Goto START>RUN and type, cmd  (hit enter)
now type, sfc /scannow  (hit enter)
SFC scan will start scanning ur system
u will need ur WinXP CD in order to fix the corrupted windows system files, if found by scan.

BTW just to tell you that Scandisk is not present in XP as its called Chkdsk now :)
and it can be run via command prompt like this >> Chkdsk C: /r
or by opening My Computer and right clicking the drive, clicking Properties and then in tools click on Check for Errors, it will do the same job as scandisk in previous windows :)

>> and System Restore does not give me a restore point.

may be it needs reinstalling, so try this,
goto Start>Run>type C:\Windows\inf and hit enter
right click the SR.inf file and click on Install
insert the WinXP CD if prompted and finish the installation
restart the system and now create a new restore point to check if its working now or not! :)

You might also try booting from the CD, going into the recovery console and running chkdsk /r.  You may get better repair results from the Console.

Dear Sheharryaar.

Here is status: I ran an FSC scan - a number of files were displayed, I did not know how to print the DOS window & did not record the names. I was not asked for a CD or know what commnd was expected so simply exited.

I ran a chkdsk as you describedI and it said found no errors but did display a lot of  "Invalid Dates"  Also System Restore  now showed a  single restore point of 11/20 and made a siccessful restoration but it does not seem to help

Tried FSC scan agaii. This tiime displayed no files  escept  Documents and Settings end user, but did ask for  a CD which I do not hve but probably will be able to replace.

So I will have to put this case on hold but will get back to you when I get the CD as it definitely seems to be required. In the meantime I will be recording exactly what operatiing problems still remaiin.

its actually a SFC(System Files Checker) scan and not FSC scan :)
and when you ran it did your get a small window with a blue progress bar, something like shown here >> http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

Also is there any reason you are trying to do System Restore and Chkdsk, i mean any problem ??

by: LrainerPosted on 2004-11-22 at 11:25:09ID: 12647681

Dear Sheharryaar

I did use the correct name SFC. I do not a blue message with a progress bar, only two identical hessages but no color and no progress bar in the first.

My current problems are constant loss of Yahoo passwords, difficultu in signing on to aol.com, and problem registering my key No. in "Mighty Max" due  to intercepting messages headed  "Licensing Protection Software"

The Mighty Max thing may be their fault - they promised me a free ecperimrntal advance update,  but it had not arrived. Can you offer asny advice about  the value of their program?

Lester

hmmmm ok you ran it from cmd... not try this, goto Start>Run>and type sfc /scannow
hit enter and check what comes now ??

>> constant loss of Yahoo passwords
does this mean that you tick that Remember Me check box but yahoo doesn't remember it ??

>> difficultu in signing on to aol.com
what's the error it throws ??

>> "Mighty Max"
ooops... dont know about it,,, can you give me its website's link so i can do a little research on it 8-)

Dear Sheharyaar.

I tried that alternate direct SFC entry but It produces only a Windows Cannot Find  message.
Defrag does not cocontinue beyond 1% completed.
Yahoo sign in is  bad. - checking Save has no effevct They  once gave me a new password which did not work. Now it does not respond after I give them the required ID. Aol is actually not bad and can be ignored.

This is Mighty Max:  http://www.pcmightymax.net/cgi-bin/view.cgi/76107mpe/download.html

There is no charge to watch ir seaerch for errors, but of course you must pay to get them fixed.

At this point perhaps we should wait for the CD.

by: SheharyaarSaahilPosted on 2004-11-25 at 19:41:29ID: 12678445

all these things are not common to happen at one time..... =\
tell me lrainer..... are you sure that the system is clean from viruses and malwares ??
how all this started.... i mean did you do anything to the system ??

and about MightyMax.....well i have never heard of it and neither i have tried it..... coz i really dont trust such tools, i believe that Windows has its diagnostic tools which are enough to solve the problems...... and if they cannot.... then i dont think so that even these third party tools can know more about windows errors than windows tools can! ;-)

You have made some pertinent comments and  my computer seems to be OK after running succesful chkdsk, defrag, and file cleanup. I solved Yahoo sign on pronlem by creatring a new user name etc.
