Hi davidlars99,

Instant messenger like yahoo or msn are not designed to transfer large movie files. Eventhough as far as I have seen there is no limit in MSN messenger file transfer , i think there is a limit for yahoo.
I have transferred around 800 MB of data via MSN and it was comparitively fast in my cable connection.

Inorder to transfer large files , use FTP to transfer.
There could be several reasons why it could be slow. It could be slow on ur end or on your friend's end.
If you still want to transfer thru messenger, do it during early morning hrs when there is no traffic .. Cable connection depends on how many ppl are using the connection so obviously during morning time it is going to free and you can use more of bandwidth

SR..

With most cable modem providers (the same goes for DSL providers) you have a lower upload rate than download rate. For instance if your Download is 600, the upload rate is often only 128. Check with your  Cable provider for the type of contract you have. Business contracts usually have the same download and upload rates, but are a lot more expensive than the private contracts.

Since you are uploading your video to your friend (or vice versa), the speed will be buch lower than if you download something from a commercial internet site.

Are you sure that all the required ports are open? If not all the ports are open the transfer goes slower. If you are behind a router or firewall the ports are probably closed.

   1.  Open as many TCP ports as you can between 6891 and 6900. (on both computers)
   2. Configure the TCP ports so that sockets on a port remain open for an extended period of time.

**If you have a router:

1. Go to your router's configuration page
(open up IE, for linksys it's 192.168.1.1, for other routers it's sometimes 192.168.0.1)
2. If you have never changed the password it will be the default for your router
           (Username: Admin, Password: Admin)
3. The router's page has tons of options, you will have to get to the port forwarding page
(my router has a tab called Applications & Gaming, then a subtab called Port Forwarding)
4. Make a new entry called anyting you want
5. Set it to forward ports between 6891 and 6900 to your computer
(You'll need the IP address of your computer: Properties of My Network Places > Properties of your connection, it will probably be 192.168.1.100, or 192.168.1.101, etc.)
6. Save the changes
--------------------------------------------------
**If you have a software firewall:

This part really depends on what firewall you have. If you use the firewall built into XP:
1. Control Panel > Windows Firewall
2. Go to the tab called "Exceptions"
3. Make sure Windows Messenger is in the list and is checked -- if it is not click add program and add it
