Question

Lost user account

Asked by: lumber21

I was messing around trying to get my IE working and rebooted at some point.  When it came to the logon screen all there was was adminastrator. What happened?  My normal account isn't under the user account list. The only place I find it is under profiles and I have no options with it there, only to delete or copy.

Hello lumber21 =)

Try hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del twice on welcome screen.... you will get a classic login box, give your username and password and hit enter
does it login with your user now ??

Sounds like you rebooted in safe mode.  Try rebooting again.

If you can login with your user this way, then go here >> http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/tune-09.html
and try to add your username in the registry following the method as given for the Adminsitrator
it will add your user to the welcome screen :)

if you cannot login, then from Adminsitrator account, goto control panel>user accounts>create a new user account
restart and check if new user is showing on welcome screen?
if yes then copy the data from your old user to this new user and carry on with the new user :)

Hi lumber21,

A case like this I would try to do system restore first. Login to the account you can enter to and do a system restore and see if that would get the system back to normal (assuming  u have not turned it off)

I don't run system restore and already new it wasn't safe mode, but reallly appreciate the help.  I tried creating the new user and it worked but still not the one I was looking for. But logging in with  Ctrl+Alt+Del worked and edited the registry and now have my login back, thank you

>>  I don't run system restore

You should have ur reasons for it .. One of the reasons I like about system restore is that If I screw up my machine to an certain extent , I can go back using system restore. I hesitate to give creating a new user account as an option as it shud be the last resort in solving an issue..  Oh well , glad you got ur issue fixed
