Xtry,
What tdoes the blue screen give for an error message?

by: leewPosted on 2004-12-09 at 13:35:11ID: 12787685

Not unless you can post the error info that appears on the screen.  Typically, the most important info is the first line or two at the top.

>> the machine is going uber slow too, shall i just format c:
How much RAM... ??
is the system clean from Viruses and Malwares ??

by: leewPosted on 2004-12-09 at 13:37:27ID: 12787721

Your system is probably infested with spyware/adware/hijackware.  It can likely be cleaned, but you need to be able to get back into windows to do that.  First step, post the error.

A sample blue screen looks as following

A problem has been detected and window has been shut
down to prevent damage to your computer. The problem
seems to be caused by the following file: cap256.sys

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

If this is the first time you've see this stop error screen, restart your
computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware of software is
properly installed. if this is a new installation ask your hardware or
software namfacturer for any windows updates you might need. If problems
continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software
Disable BIOS memory option such as caching or shadowing, if you need
to use safe mode to remove or disable components restart your computer,
press F8 to select advanced startup options, and then select safe mode

STOP: 0x000000050 (OXF9CBC4AB, 0x00000000, OXF9CBC4AB, xxxxxxxx)
cap256.sys-address: F9CBC4AB base at F9CBA000 Date stamp nnnnnnnn
^^^^^^  <--- this is the failing module name

Note : If the failing instruction address is within the range of ntoskrnl.exe, the failing module is unreadable character.
In this example 0x000000050 is the bugcheck code. The failing module name is cap256.sys. The failing module name may be the victim and not the culprit.

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck.  The bugcheck was:
0x000000d1 (0x0000002d, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0xf75a6ad3).
A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini121004-03.dmp.

Finding
1) The failing module is portcls.sys and atapi.sys.
2) Your XP is at base level. However  ntoskrnl.exe and win32k.sys has applied almost the latest patch.
3) Most of the windows modules are the base level including portcls.sys and atapi.sys.

Suggestion
1) Upgrade your XP to the latest SP1 patch.

If it's that bad and giving you more than just a headache then if there is nothing important that you haven't backedup (everyone always has backup disks RIGHT?) Then Just Format C drive and reinstall windows. Easily said and done. If you still have the same problem after reinstalling windows then you have bad ram or something possible Terminal with the Mother board.

Note* When this same problem afflicted my computer it was the Physical failure of my harddrive. I replaced the harddrive reinstalled windows and no more problems.

I hope that i have been of some help.

                                                   Sincerely Rennie

I am experiencing a similar problem with my friend's computer which I am suspecting the memory as the cause. Does Memtest86+ a reliable program to test memory?

Since it's a topic created by Xtry. I am not sure if I can post question here. If not, please let me know.

dc25,

You have to create a new question as your problem may have another root cause. If you get bugcheck code D1,  I need to study the minidump to find out the failing module. Sometimes the culprit is the faulty ram or device driver.

by: sidpaulPosted on 2005-04-29 at 11:29:20ID: 13896990

i would do a safe boot. open msconfig. go to the startup tab and uncheck all the items there. and restart the system. check if the error occurs.
if yes go to the services tab and check hide all microsoft services box. then disable all services and go from there.
if the error does not come go and check half the items and see if the error comes. if yes uncheck half of that half..like divide ur choices that way u can get to the error quickly

Normally, blue screes is due to display drivers problem or Physical (RAM) memory issue.

Xtry, you can  re-install ur DISPLAY driver(uninstall and install back) and, remove RAM, clean up the SLOT and insert back.

If this doesn't work, you can simply format c:/ and install FRESH OS, which is the best solution with no headache.

hope, this help you

Just to follow up on my comment, I found a solution for my problem. It turned out that the serial ATA plug on the MB is pulled out a little. After pushing back the plug back in place on the MB, it works okay.

Dear friend,
is this screen comes when booting XP or after booting the OS?

If this screen comes when booting the PC then there is one solution Run the recovery console using XP bootable CD.  And using CHKDSK or CHKDSK /F and u can resolve this error. If this happen frequently u must check ur hard disk for bad sectors or could be RAM errors

in general cases this The blue screen may arise due to loose connected RAM or improperly installed software. There are several other errors due which you may witness the blue screen of death. any way, try removing your ram after turning of your pc, erase the connecting fingers of the RAM card with an eraser(both the side, properly). this wold clear the rust or dust if any in the fingers. If you are from location wher your have moist climate this may solve the problem. other wise post the error message.

this may happen due to partially dameged Memory. If any where in the message you find "unreliable memory location" or somthing like this you may try replacing the RAM

If you suspect a failed memory stick, one of the better memory testers I have found is GoldMemory.

OK... I have to say that after reading some of the postings and replies here, sometimes I ask myself why do I let this site take my 9.95 every month. But, thankfully -and whithout any intention to praise or demean anyone- I stumble upon paragraphs of wisdom from those who know -a handful- and have their feet in the real world.

OK, OK enough with the boring prose, to the point.

Just start your computer with the godforsaken WINDOWS installation CD and use Recovery Console -option R in the blue menu- They seem to have a historic preference for this color.

Just browse through the Interface once its up and runnig and break your noodle figuring out what to do.

I appologize but will not show you what to do, enough with having given the lead. It's up to you to investigate and draw your conclussions and -more important than anything- it will help most of the people out there understand that it is necessary to have an objective vision of a problem in order to speak a legitimate solution for it; saving many from unnecessary troubleshooting steps.

 Sincerely yours,

 Rey.

I have the same problem...

I've checked ATA cable, disconnect 2nd hdd, verified memory slots, changed memory to other free slot, changed PS with a new one, change ATA cable with a new one, change CPU fan (had some noise), made a new partition of C and run winXP and when it's copying files jumps the mentioned error again.

I've tried installing Win2000 and happens again...

Anyone could solve this problem?
