Question

XP Pro logon loop at welcome screen

Asked by: sshrum

Win XP Winlogon settings!  I've read through all of the threads about resetting the registry to point to the right file in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
with the userinit being set to \WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe (it is a 24,00 byte file) but I still can't login to either admin or user account.

My windows directory is on a SATA channel and have tried the path as C: and as E: which is where it shows up if I boot to recovery console.  I have gotten BARTPE and regedit to work on the bad machine but am still stuck and don't want to repair XP for fear of losing data.

I can't get to anything when booting to XP Pro past the welcome screen, so I can't run spyware/antivirus.

My winlogon registry is quite short on the machine that is not working versus the one right next to it.  Could someone paste the contents of the winlogon registry here?

I've also tried the renaming to wsaupdater.exe without success.  My reg file makes no reference to it at all.
I tried changing the key to explorer.exe as mentioned before without success.  Shell is set to explorer.exe already.

Help.

Unable to logon to Windows after removing BlazeFind using a spyware removal utility?

Logon - Logoff loop, also caused by BlazeFind

Another critical symptom caused by this malware: This malware modifies the Userinit area in the registry (replacing the userinit.exe with wsaupdater.exe) and Ad-Aware (with a particular definition update) removes the wsaupdater.exe file from the system, thus causing the Logon - Logoff loop. That is, when you login to Windows, the 'loading personal settings" verbose will appear, but suddenly it will logoff. This issue was documented clearly by Lavasoftusa in it's Lavahelp Knowledgebase.

Here is the solution to the logon - logoff issue in Windows XP.

Enter the Recovery Console

Boot the system using the Windows XP CD-ROM. In the first screen when the Setup begins, read the instructions press "R" (in the first screen) enter the Recovery Console. Type-in the built-in Administrator password to enter the Console. You'll see the prompt reading C:\Windows (Or any other drive-letter where you've installed XP)

Type the following command and press Enter.

CD SYSTEM32
(If that does not work, try CHDIR SYSTEM32)

COPY USERINIT.EXE WSAUPDATER.EXE

Quit Recovery Console by typing EXIT and restart Windows.

You'll be able to login successfully as you've created the wsaupdater.exe file (now, a copy of userinit.exe)

Now, change the USERINIT value in the registry (see Phase II in this page) and change it accordingly.

I had to go all the way down to step 4 in the recovery console and manually copy reg files.  I think there was large portion of the userinit regfile keys missing.  Thanks.  I'm up and runny.  Now to virus/spyware scan it all.

Hello,

I had the same problem, but all the answers did  not work for me. When finaly logged on to windows bij changing the cmd.exe to logon.scr (http://65.24.134.81/KipSolutions/LostPassword/LostTheAdministratorPassword.htm) i could start regedit.  i could also see the virus log files. In the virus log files was no notice of BlazeFind and so a copy of userinit.exe to wsaupdater did not help. All the tricks i found on the web did not help.

Finaly i replaced userinit.exe with a copy of userinit.exe from a clean computer (XP Pro computer) and that solved the problem for me.
So the problem was easer as thought. But thangs for all the help from you fooks.
Maybe my problem solving can help out other people who have the same problem.

Oh this is killing me! :) I too have the momentary Log-on/Log-off

This is what I've tried so far.....

Copied userinit.exe to wsaupdater.exe -

Replaced the userinit with one from another, working, computer and copied that to wsaupdater -

I created a BartsPE disk with the RegEdit plug-in as described on "paulscomputer" page.

When I edit the registry it says userinit is X:\i386\system32\userinit.exe,
I change it to C:\Windows\system32\userinit.exe,

But it doesn't save some how.... When I go back it's back to "X\i386"
It looks to me like That key is from the Barts disk, where a \i386\system32 DOES exist
What's with this "X" stuff?? ;)

Is there a way to point the Registry Editor to another place?

Am I doing something wrong?

If I try to import a copy of the last Good registry, I can't find where it resides...

I've come, Paid-Up for a month just trying to resolve this and frankly, don't see much here I didn't find on my own :(

OK, a little history - WinXP Home OEM SONY VAIO desktop. Giant said Nero was trying to make some changes, I uninstalled - ran "RegDoctor" to clean up any Nero keys left over. I uninstalled RegDoctor. I shutdown. Next Day - I'm in trouble!

ANY help would REALLY be Appreciated.....
