Question

Probelm with volume control going down

I have seen something like this somewhere else but never with a solution.  I have a PC running XP Pro (not SP2) and here recently (unfortuantley no connecting actions remembered) the volume control will actually go down as you watch it.  I can move it up half way or all the way and it will slide back down to the bottom.  If you keep clicking on a spot on the slide the control will keep going back up and then fall off when ever you let off the left mouse button.  I have ran SpyBot, Adaware and scanned with McAfee and all are clean.  This is really starting to get me.

Hello mabarnes11 =)

First of all have a look in the Task Manager processes and check what are the applications running that can possibly cause this issue.... try turning them off and then check.... !!
or better do it like this, Goto Start>Run>msconfig>Startup, and click on Disable All
now goto Services section, and tick Hide Microsoft Services
and now untick all those third party services
restart and now check if the same problem ??
if NO then u can re-enable each application\service at a time to trace out the culprit one !!

And if Yes then Second quick fix is to uninstall the sound card from Device manager, restart and reinstall the drivers.... it should set all the options and settings back to default again :)

do you have external speakers, if so, these can be faulty, unplug them and now see if you can move the sound slider without it going down.

I have tried all of that and problem still exists.  Even swapped speakers.

To add to the mystery...  I rebooted this a.m. and everythign worked UNTIL I went into the Internet Explorer and the volume immediately fell off.  A Ha!  The culprit!  So I rebooted again and opened Windows media player as I had before bound and determined to NOT open IE.  It ran great until a reminder popped up from Outlook and down the volume went.  Interesting and I hope not a coincidence.

hmmmm IE and OE.... interesting! :)
sure that machine is free from viruses and malwares and you are not using any third party addon program which "enhances" IE and OE...... like some smileys software! :)

Also openStart>All Programs>Accessories>Entertaintment>Volume Control and check what are the things which is muted here ?

Just out of curiosity, you don't have a multimedia keyboard with volume controls that might be malfunctioning do you?

The machine is as free as McAfee and the malware anti progrqams will detect.  i have ran three programs plus Mcafee and Stinger to boot.  Thre is nothing muted on any of the sound choices,  In fact all are at max.

I do have multimedia keybaord and will replace it this pm with a spare I have.  Good point.

for me the TAD-In and Microphone are muted by default... did you change them yourself! :)

In mine there is no TAD in nor microphone.  I have Wave, SW Synth, CD Audio, Line in and PC Speaker adn all are max not muted.  Just got back from call out so will play with keyborad in a bit.

Okay so now I have a bazillion controlls.  Didn't knwo about the options.  The only thing muted is the mic.  I still don't have the "TAD-In."  What is that?

TAD means Telephone Answering Device..... may be you dont have that option with the sound card :-?
microphone should be muted..... so its ok! :)

It appears to have been the keybaord.  It is(was) an HP multimedia with a rotating volume control.  It is also USB. I replaced it with another HP keyboard with the buttons you hold down to raise and lower the sound.  It connects to the keybord port on the PC versus USB.  I wonder if the pot went bad?  I will never know but the garbage guys might.
